Am I Too Young for Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia, or excessive breast tissue in men, can affect patients beginning as young as the teenage years. Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery, is the only permanent solution for patients who wish to restore a masculine chest contour. Like a majority of plastic surgeries, this procedure is typically reserved for adults, even as many teenagers are affected by gynecomastia. So, how young is too young to undergo a male breast reduction?

Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

The ideal candidate for gynecomastia surgery is 18 years old or older and generally healthy. Before your male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge will examine you to confirm that there are not other causes of your breast enlargement. However, sometimes there are other medical reasons for gynecomastia and often patients first consult with their primary care doctor. With these considerations in mind, a male breast reduction candidate should be overall healthy aside from their gynecomastia. It is best to be a nonsmoker or willing to quit smoking for the surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge will review your health history and determine whether you are a good candidate for the surgery.

How Old is Too Old for Male Breast Reduction?

There is no upper age limit for male breast reduction surgery, though it is important that you are healthy enough for the procedure at any age. Older patients may struggle with health complications that can make surgery dangerous, but there is no set age limit for gynecomastia surgery. Each patient is evaluated on a case-by-case basis during their consultation.

How Can I Maintain Results After Male Breast Reduction?

Excess breast tissue is permanently removed during gynecomastia surgery. However, there are some steps you can take to make sure that your results will last long-term.

New fat can accumulate in the chest after your surgery if you do not maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet. This means that it is important to prioritize a balanced and nutritious diet as well as a regular exercise routine. Eat plenty of lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. It is also best to limit trans fats or saturated fats, sodium, sugar, and alcohol. You should also make sure that you get at least 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week.
