Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction Surgery)?

Gynecomastia or male breast reduction is a cosmetic surgery procedure to reduce over-grown breasts in men. The condition of enlarged breasts in males may occur in adolescence or even in adulthood. Genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, prolonged use of certain medications, or some diseases may be the cause of this problem. Apart from aesthetic concerns, oversized male breasts may also cause emotional challenges for the patient.

Dr. Dean Jabs and Dr. Franklin Richards are board-certified plastic surgeons providing surgical treatment for gynecomastia. They operate through their offices in Bethesda, MD, and McLean, VA, and receive patients from Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and surrounding areas for gynecomastia surgery and other procedures.

What Constitutes Gynecomastia?

Some overweight males may have slightly enlarged breasts, which may be due to sagging skin and excess fat pockets in the breast area. Such conditions may be improved with diet and exercise. The plastic surgeon will carefully evaluate the characteristics of the breasts before recommending gynecomastia surgery. One or more of the following common characteristics will usually define the presence of gynecomastia:

  • Presence of excess fat deposits in the localized breast area.
  • Loose skin and excess glandular tissue in the breast area.
  • Presence of both excess fats and glandular tissue.

Gynecomastia may occur in one of the breasts or both breasts. Patients in Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive cosmetic surgery for this problem from Dr. Jabs and Dr. Richards.

Candidates

A fantastic candidate for gynecomastia or male breast reduction procedure can be an adolescent or adult male suffering from abnormally high levels of breast tissue. If the person is bothered by this condition aesthetically, emotionally, or physically, the surgeon may recommend gynecomastia surgery.

The person should be in fantastic overall health with no condition that can put him at risk during or after surgery. The development of the breast tissue should have stabilized before the surgery can be performed.

Surgical Procedure

The surgical technique for gynecomastia will be chosen based on the patient’s breast size and the patient’s unique aesthetic goals about flattening and enhancing the chest contour. In case of very excessive breast tissue, the breast may sag and may require resizing and repositioning of the areolas as well.

Intravenous sedation or general anesthesia will be used to perform the surgery. If the skin is fairly elastic and firm, only liposuction techniques may be enough to reduce the breast size. However, if glandular breast tissue is present, surgical excision will be necessary.

Recovery and Results

Most patients will be in a position to go back to work within seven to 10 days after the surgery. Mild pain and discomfort in the treated area can be expected for the first few days. Results in the case of male breast reduction are usually permanent or fairly long-lasting. The patient should maintain a stable body weight. If breast tissue development recurs in the future, secondary surgery may be required.
