Cost & Plastic Surgery: Why You Usually Get What You Pay For

The cost of plastic surgery can vary wildly. Much of it depends on the type of procedure you’ve selected. Are you looking for a non-surgical procedure or something a bit more extensive? A lot of the cost also depends upon your location and plastic surgeon. For instance, the cost of a tummy tuck in California will probably be significantly different than in Maryland.

As you can see, there are a lot of different factors that go into the cost of your plastic surgery procedure. Here’s what to know about plastic surgery costs and what you can expect to learn during your consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons.

Non-Surgical Vs. Surgical Procedure

Non-surgical procedures usually mean no downtime – but your results may only last a few months to years. Examples of non-surgical procedures include dermal fillers, microneedling, and laser skin resurfacing. Surgical procedures, on the other hand, require a few weeks of dedicated downtime but can last for many years. Some of the most popular surgical procedures are breast augmentation, liposuction, and rhinoplasty. Typically, non-surgical procedures cost much less than surgery, but surgery produces the most transformative results.

Factors That Determine Plastic Surgery Cost

There are a lot of things included in the cost of your plastic surgery estimate. It can be shocking to look at the numbers if you’re unaware of what determines the cost estimate. Here are the main things that will factor into your plastic surgery price during your consultation.

  • Procedure: Some procedures are inherently more expensive because they come with greater risk, cover more area, or require more specialization. Some procedures also include the cost of materials like implants.
  • Surgeon’s fees: A more experienced plastic surgeon will sometimes charge more than someone with less experience. This is because they may offer far knowledge, industry experience, and safety measures than an inexperienced plastic surgeon.
  • Anesthesiologist fees: Your plastic surgeon will have a preferred anesthesiologist that they work with. Many board-certified plastic surgeons have years of experience working with the same anesthesiologist and are adept at keeping your surgery safe and low-risk.
  • Surgical center fees: Any surgery also includes the cost of facilities, materials, and surgical staff. We perform surgeries at our own in-house, accredited surgical center equipped with its own team.

Should Your Plastic Surgeon Be Board Certified?

The plastic surgeon you choose should always be experienced and board-certified by entities like the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Experienced plastic surgeons are also members of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) and the Aesthetic Society (ASAPS). Designations like F.A.C.S., or Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, are also good markers of an experience. These certifications require rigorous training and ongoing education, meaning they can directly impact the safety and success of your procedure. By opting for cheaper or less experienced surgeons, you risk your health and results. Always seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon for your cosmetic needs!
