About Silver Spring, MD
Silver Spring is an unincorporated, census-designated place located inside the Capital Beltway, near Washington, D.C., and within Montgomery County, Maryland. The oldest, most urbanized, and southernmost part of Silver Spring is a major business hub that lies at the north apex of Washington, D.C. The area is named after a spring with a mica-speckled shoreline that gives it a silvery and shiny appearance. It was discovered by Francis Preston Blair in 1840, and he bought most of the surrounding area. Acorn Park is believed to be the site of the original spring.
