At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, our board-certified surgeons specialize in advanced fat grafting techniques that create beautiful, long-lasting results. If you are considering a natural alternative to traditional breast augmentation with implants, a fat transfer to the breasts might be a great option for you.
What is a Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer?
A fat transfer to the breasts or autologous fat grafting is a cosmetic surgery procedure that uses patients’ own fat to increase breast volume and improve shape. During the procedure, excess fat is removed from the abdomen, thighs, or hips using liposuction, then purified and injected into the breasts to achieve your desired breast shape and size. This technique offers a natural look and feel compared to traditional implants and avoids the use of foreign materials.

Good Candidates for a Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer
Ideal candidates for fat transfer breast augmentation are non-smokers in good health who are committed to maintaining their health after surgery. This is a great option for patients who want to subtly increase their breast size and achieve natural-looking breast enhancement without the use of breast implants. However, patients must have enough excess fat in donor areas for liposuction. This can be determined during your consultation.
It is important to have realistic expectations about what can be achieved with a fat transfer to the breasts. All of this will be discussed in greater detail during your consultation at our office in Bethesda, MD.
You will receive personalized recommendations and can view before-and-after photographs to help you make an informed decision. A cost estimate will also be provided. We encourage you to ask any questions you might have, as patient comfort is one of our top priorities.
Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer Technique
Fat grafting breast augmentation method involves three main steps. First, fat is carefully removed from donor sites like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks using liposuction. We offer a variety of liposuction options, including traditional liposuction along with advanced technologies like J-Plasma Renuvion and SmartLipo Laser. These power-assisted or laser-assisted liposuction techniques melt the fat cells before removal for easier removal.
After liposuction, the harvested fat cells are carefully processed to ensure only the healthiest and most viable fat cells are used for transfer. Finally, the purified fat is injected into different areas of the breast and at various depths to create a natural-looking, smooth breast contour.
Consultation
A consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons in Bethesda, MD is the first step in any plastic surgery procedure. During this consultation, Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge will review your surgical goals and medical history to ensure a fat transfer to the breasts is right for you. They will also assess the fat transfer site to make sure there is enough fat that can be harvested for the procedure.
Preparation
Before your fat transfer procedure, you will be given detailed instructions on how to prepare for surgery. Patients must stop smoking for six weeks before surgery and should also avoid herbal supplements, blood-thinning medications, and anti-inflammatory medications during this time. Physical examinations, such as a mammogram, may also be required. Patients are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle so their bodies will be prepared for healing and recovery.
Procedure
Breast augmentation with fat grafting can be performed under local or general anesthesia. First, small incisions will be made in the donor site(s) to harvest unwanted fat. Next, the harvested fat cells will be carefully injected into the breasts using a specialized cannula. This procedure takes about three hours, and patients can return home the same day. Arrangements should be made for someone to drive you home after the procedure.
Recovery
Recovery from a fat transfer surgical procedure is typically faster than traditional breast augmentation, and there is minimal scarring. Mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness in the donor and breast areas is common, but these symptoms will gradually improve during the first week of recovery. Most patients resume normal activities within a week, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Patients will be given a compression garment and prescribed pain medication to assist with any discomfort and ensure proper healing. We also recommend the use of cold compresses and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to help you recover quickly and safely.
Results
Fat transfer breast augmentation results will develop gradually as swelling reduces and the transferred fat cells settle into the surrounding breast tissue. Some fat reabsorption is expected, as not all of the transferred fatty tissue will survive. Final results of your breast procedure can be seen about 4-6 months after the procedure, and they will last a lifetime with a healthy diet and exercise routine.
