What is Lip Filler?
Lip fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid fillers and used to enhance the volume, contour, and shape of the lips. When carefully administered by one of our experienced specialists, lip filler can augment lip size, define the lip borders, smooth lip lines, and improve overall lip symmetry for a rejuvenated, youthful appearance. At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, we offer a variety of FDA-approved fillers from Juvederm and Restylane that can safely and effectively create beautiful results.

Good Candidates for Lip Filler
Ideal candidates for lip filler are healthy adults who wish to address thin, flat, or aging lips without surgical lip augmentation. Many patients have genetically thin lips or have noticed lip thinning due to natural aging. Candidates must not have allergies to filler ingredients and should have realistic expectations for subtle and elegant results. Lip injections are also a great option for individuals wanting a temporary but long-lasting enhancement.
Patient education and comfort are always prioritized, ensuring you feel fully informed and confident about your choices.
How Lip Filler Works
Dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the body that attracts moisture to hydrate and soften the lips while creating a subtle plumping effect. Lip filler treatments can be customized to target various regions of the mouth. Enhancements can focus on added fullness in the upper lip and/or lower lip, redefining the Cupid’s bow, creating symmetry, and lifting the mouth corners for a beautiful smile. Injectable fillers can also be used to address fine lines around the mouth, known as perioral or smoker’s lines, and vertical lip lines, while boosting overall lip hydration. Treatment plans are adjusted to each patient’s unique anatomy and treatment goals. Our goal is to enhance the lips and ensure they look balanced and harmonious with the rest of your facial features.
Consultation
A personalized consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, MD, is your first step toward beautiful lips. During this visit, your provider will assess your facial proportions and lip anatomy, discuss your medical history, and ask about your specific concerns and goals. The initial consultation allows you to discuss your ideal lip shape, review safety information, and preview anticipated results.
Lip Filler Procedure
Lip filler treatment only takes about thirty minutes and is performed in one of our comfortable, private treatment rooms. Your lips will be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic or numbing cream can be applied, if desired, for maximum comfort. Using a fine needle or cannula, the provider gently injects small amounts of filler into targeted areas of the lips. The process allows for precise sculpting and gradual enhancement. Most appointments take less than an hour from start to finish, and you can return to your daily activities immediately after treatment with minimal restrictions.
Lip Filler Recovery
There is minimal recovery and downtime after lip filler injections. Mild swelling, sensitivity, and bruising around the injection site are common for the first 1-2 days, but these effects resolve quickly. We recommend applying an ice pack and using over-the-counter pain medication to minimize swelling and discomfort. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 24 hours, but most normal activities can be immediately resumed. Patients must avoid massaging or manipulating the lips after treatment to help the filler settle naturally.
Results from Lip Filler
Results from lip filler are visible almost immediately after treatment, but final results will continue to develop for about one week as swelling reduces and the filler settles into the skin. Your lips will appear fuller, smoother, and more evenly shaped while maintaining natural softness and movement. With proper care, the results typically last six to twelve months, depending on your metabolism and the specific type of filler being used. Regular touch-up treatments can help you maintain your optimal look and feel confident year-round.
