About Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as fat suction or suction lipectomy, is a technique used to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body, including the chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms, back, flanks, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Several different liposuction techniques may be used, either alone or in combination with each other, including the tumescent, laser-assisted (LAL), and power-assisted (PAL) liposuction methods. Liposuction is not a substitute for losing weight, but a method of removing localized fat that does not respond to dieting and/or exercises. Patients will be able to walk immediately after surgery but will be told to avoid more strenuous activities for two to four weeks. Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic operations that we perform. Our patients usually return to work in 4 – 7 days depending on the number of areas treated.

Why Men Choose Liposuction

The number of plastic surgery procedures performed on men has been steadily rising over the years and liposuction is one of the most frequently requested procedures by men. Like women, men too care about their appearance and want to look their best. And with more male-specific techniques available, more men are eager to undergo plastic surgery procedures because they can accomplish an ideal sculpted male physique. There are many different reasons why men may choose to undergo liposuction. Many of these reasons are in some way related to confidence, whether it be in order to give them more confidence in their job, dating, or simply day-to-day lives.

Treatment Areas

Liposuction can be performed to remove fat from almost anywhere on the body where there are localized excess fat deposits. Some of the most popular areas include:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Chin
  • Flanks
  • Calves
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Neck
  • Thigh

In order to determine whether or not the patient would benefit from liposuction in one or more of these areas, they should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon such as one of the surgeons here at Cosmetic Surgery Associates.

Liposuction for Enlarged Male Chest

Liposuction can be performed in order to treat gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of male breasts. This can occur due to a variety of factors including increased genetics, estrogen level, drugs and medication, Klinefelter Syndrome, hyperthyroidism, or simply aging. Assuming that the patient has good elasticity remaining in their skin and the majority of their enlarged male chest can be attributed to excess fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be enough to treat this condition. Tumescent, laser, and power-assisted liposuction may all be good techniques for treating gynecomastia. In order to determine whether or not one would be a good candidate, contact our Bethesda, MD office today.

Good Candidates

In order to be considered for male liposuction at Cosmetic Surgery Associates, patients should schedule a consultation with Dr. Richards, Dr. Magge, or Dr. Jabs in Bethesda, MD.

Our doctors are familiar with the ideal male physique and perform customized male-specific liposuction techniques for each patient.

Good candidates for male liposuction should be close or within range of their target weight loss goal. However, they may have stubborn localized fat deposits in areas that don’t seem to respond to diet or exercise. Like any patient interested in cosmetic surgery, they should be in good health before the treatment. Besides being at a stable and healthy weight, they should also be nonsmokers and not suffer from any critical medical conditions that could affect their ability to heal.

Techniques

The doctors at Cosmetic Surgery Associates are well-trained in a variety of liposuction procedures in order to help our patients meet their specific goals. The various methods can be performed alone or in combination, depending on the patient’s body, goals, and lifestyle.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction gets its name from the tumescent solution that is administered during the liposuction process. In this procedure, a dilute amount of saline, epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected into the surgical area prior to suctioning the fat. The special solution produces firmness in the area, which makes the fat cells easier to target and reduces the amount of bleeding. It also helps minimize discomfort during the procedure and throughout recovery. This is considered the gold-standard method of liposuction.

Procedure

The liposuction procedure is typically performed at our state-of-the-art outpatient surgical center, where the patient will not need to spend the night following the procedure. Depending on the extent of the procedure, patients will have the opportunity to choose between local anesthesia, oral sedation, and general anesthesia.

The procedure normally takes between 1-2 hours.

First, the doctor will make small incisions around the surgical site. Inserting a cannula through the incisions, usually made in natural body creases, he will introduce the tumescent solution to the area. Then, he will perform one of the techniques discussed above. The right technique(s) will be determined at the time of the consultation.

Additional Male Procedures

As cosmetic surgery becomes more and more popular among men, our doctors find themselves personally performing more male procedures. Some of the most common procedures among men include, but are not limited to:

  • Tummy tuck: Clinically referred to as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is performed to enhance the appearance of the abdomen by tightening abdominal muscles and removing lax skin. This is performed on men who have lost a significant amount of weight. Liposuction and tummy tuck are often performed at the same time.
  • Facelift: For men interested in enhancing the appearance of their face as well, a facelift is a popular procedure. A facelift is performed on patients who want to reduce signs of aging on the face, including excess skin, lines and wrinkles, and sunken features. It is frequently combined with a neck lift.
  • Eyelid surgery: The eyes are the window to the soul and eyelid surgery can help brighten the appearance of the eyes by correcting the appearance of excess skin, bags, or droopy eyelids.

Feel free to ask one of our doctors about these procedures or any others of interest.

Recovery

A friend or family member should be available following the treatment to drive the patient home and help for at least the first 24 hours of their recovery. Following the procedure, the patient will be wrapped in a compression garment that helps reduce swelling and enforces the desired outcome. There may be some soreness or discomfort in the initial days following the procedure. This can be controlled with an approved over-the-counter medication or prescription provided by one of our doctors. Patients will be able to walk immediately but should avoid strenuous activities for at least three weeks. Usually, patients can return to work within 4-7 days.
