What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, otherwise known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses the skin’s natural ability to repair and heal itself in order to correct the signs of facial aging. The treatment can effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, fine lines, and discoloration, and is also very beneficial in reducing the appearance of acne scars and improving texture. Microneedling does not use any synthetic material, no incisions, and no anesthesia; it is a completely natural approach to skin rejuvenation.

How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling works by using several tiny medical-grade needles to calculatedly puncture the skin and create micro-channels which enables the body’s own healing mechanisms. This will cause the release of cytokines and other chemicals in the body that stimulate the growth and development of new elastin and collagen. Through a series of treatments, the appearance of wrinkles and lines will decrease, the skin will become rejuvenated, and collagen growth will work to reduce the risk of these concerns arising in the future.
To go into deeper detail, after receiving the treatment, the body has three phases in which it goes through when healings.
The duration of the microneedling procedure is about 15-30 minutes from beginning to end.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?
The number of microneedling treatments a patient should undergo will depend on the treatment area and their desired results. Generally though, patients will require more than one session. If wrinkles and fine lines are the concern, about four to six treatments are recommended. If scars are the concern, six to eight treatments would be better. Again, this will depend though on the individual since it is the person’s own natural healing response that counteracts these skin concerns. Each treatment should be spread at least a month apart.
Natural Rejuvenation Phases
Phase One: Once the treatment has been performed in the desired area, the skin will become inflamed. What this does is jump-start the immune system. The body will begin to disinfect the tiny wounds, remove any bacteria, create new tissue, and increase the amount of blood flow to the treatment area.
Phase Two: The next step in the body’s healing process is proliferation. During this time, the body will rebuild the treatment area using new cells, as well as the fibroblasts, elastin, and collagen that are created to help smooth the skin. In addition to this, new blood vessels will be created, ensuring that the new blood flow remains constant to the new cells.
Phase Three: This portion of the healing process is referred to as remodeling. During this time, the body has already obtained new dermal tissues and blood vessels within the treatment region and the temporary collagen will then be replaced with a stronger, longer-lasting form of collagen that takes its place. This development in the skin will allow for wrinkles, pores, lines, etc., to shrink and tighten, providing a more natural and subtle way to improve the condition of the skin.

Candidates
Patients considering microneedling should be looking to improve the look and feel of their skin, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, lines, scars, and/or mildly lax skin in a non-invasive manner.
This treatment is safe for almost every skin type and can correct an array of skin concerns, making it very likely for the majority of interested women and men to be candidates. Patients looking to address severe skin laxity may be better suited for a facelift.
Microneedling Process
The microneedling expert will begin by applying an even layer of serum over the surface of the skin. This is to heighten results as the serum will get absorbed quickly through the microchannels.
They will then adjust the SkinPen needles to the appropriate length for the treatment area and cosmetic concern. By slowing moving the automated SkinPen over the treatment area, the pen will create small microchannels in the skin. This will immediately begin to stimulate new collagen production and healthier skin.
Recovery
After undergoing the microneedling treatment, patients can expect their skin to be flushed and slightly tender for two to four days; however, some patients notice that they are fully healed within 24 hours. This will depend greatly on the depth of treatment and the severity of the problems treated. We recommend that you receive between three to six treatments scheduled a month apart from each other in order to receive optimal results. Once a year routine treatments can then be undergone as touch-ups. It is best to stay out of direct sunlight for a few days following the treatment and wear a lot of sunscreen when outside. This should be a general skincare rule.
Results
Within days patients will notice that the overall look and feel of the skin in the treated area is smoother and more firm. The new collagen provides a “shrinking” effect of the skin, allowing it to tighten and look more youthful and radiant.
