Good Candidates for a Mini Tummy Tuck
Ideal mini tummy tuck candidates are healthy individuals who are at or near their ideal weight but are struggling with localized sagging skin or fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. Candidates should be non-smokers or committed to not smoking for at least six weeks before and after surgery.
It is also important to have realistic expectations about what can or cannot be achieved with the mini tummy tuck surgery. If you have significant amounts of hanging abdominal skin or separated abdominal muscles, a full tummy tuck might be the better solution for the best results. During your consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons, they will determine if a mini tummy tuck is the optimal solution for your needs.

Mini Tummy Tuck Technique
The mini tummy tuck involves making a small, discreet incision along the bikini line. Through this incision, the surgeon removes excess or loose skin. Liposuction may be included to assist in fat removal, creating a smoother abdominal contour. Unlike a full tummy tuck, the belly button is not repositioned, and the upper stomach is not addressed, leading to a faster recovery and a smaller scar. Using precision and expertise, our board-certified plastic surgeons ensure your results look natural and are well-balanced with the rest of your physique.
Consultation
All plastic surgery procedures begin with a consultation with Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge at our office in Bethesda, MD. During your private consultation, your surgeon will review your medical history, examine your abdomen, and discuss your concerns and desired outcomes. You will learn about pre- and post-operative instructions, what to expect during recovery, and view before and after photos of previous patients. To make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your decision, we encourage you to ask any questions you might have.
Preparation
Proper surgical preparation is essential for the success of your mini tummy tuck. You will be provided with detailed instructions, such as stopping certain medications, creating a healthy diet and exercise plan to maintain a stable weight, and preparing your home for a comfortable recovery. On the day of your surgery, we recommend arriving in comfortable clothing, and you must have someone available to drive you home after surgery.
Mini Tummy Tuck Procedure
The mini tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and takes about two hours. During surgery, an incision will be made along the bikini line, and your surgeon will remove the excess skin and fat. The remaining skin is carefully pulled down and repositioned for a taut and contoured effect. The incision will then be sutured and bandaged. Patients will spend an additional hour in a recovery room before they can return home.
Mini Tummy Tuck Recovery
After a mini tummy tuck, mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common for a few days, but our team provides medication and guidance to speed healing. Most patients can resume light activities and return to work in one to two weeks, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for up to six weeks, or until your surgeon advises. We will prescribe pain medication and provide compression garments to minimize swelling and ensure beautiful results.
Results from a Mini Tummy Tuck
The results of your mini tummy tuck will be visible after a few weeks as the swelling diminishes. Results can continue to improve for up to 3-4 months. Your lower abdomen will appear flatter, firmer, and more sculpted, giving you a renewed sense of confidence and making physical activities easier and more comfortable. Scarring from the procedure is minimal and easily concealed beneath clothing and swimwear. To maintain your results, it is important to keep a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.
