Dermaplaning is a quick and effective treatment for people who want to improve their uneven skin tone or rough skin texture. At Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, MD, we provide advanced dermaplaning treatments in a comfortable and welcoming environment, helping you enhance your skin’s natural glow and feel your most confident every day.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a gentle cosmetic procedure that can quickly address mild skin irregularities such as dull skin, rough skin texture, and enlarged pores. It involves the removal of dead skin cells and fine facial hair using a precise, medical-grade blade, a form of manual exfoliation. This process reveals fresh, healthy skin beneath the surface and provides an immediate improvement in skin texture and the brightness of your complexion. By eliminating dull surface cells and peach fuzz, dermaplaning also enhances the absorption of skin care products and allows makeup to glide on more smoothly.

Good Candidates for Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle exfoliation techniques, making it safe for most skin types and tones. This quick treatment can temporarily remove unwanted hair, restore a more radiant complexion, or remove superficial skin growths and blemishes.
Dermaplaning is an especially great option for patients who are pregnant or have sensitive skin and want to avoid harsh chemicals or invasive treatments. However, patients with a history of inflammatory skin conditions might not be suitable candidates. If you have active acne, you will have to wait to receive treatment. Your medical history and treatment goals will be discussed in detail at your consultation to determine whether dermaplaning is right for you.
During a dermaplaning treatment, a skilled provider uses a sterile surgical scalpel held at a specific angle to gently exfoliate the skin by removing superficial layers of dead skin and vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the surface of the face.
How Dermaplaning Works
As these dead or damaged skin cells are removed, mild acne scars, sun spots, and other superficial blemishes are also stripped away, revealing an underlying layer of healthy, glowing skin.
Consultation
When you visit Cosmetic Surgery Associates for a dermaplaning consultation, one of our expert physicians will carefully assess your skin and ask about your cosmetic goals and concerns. The consultation provides the opportunity to discuss your skin health history, the type of treatment you wish to receive, and desired outcomes. We will provide personalized recommendations to help you achieve your best results with a treatment plan that fits into your personal lifestyle and individual needs.
Dermaplaning Procedure
The dermaplaning procedure takes thirty to forty-five minutes and is performed in one of our comfortable treatment rooms. Although most patients do not find this treatment to be painful, numbing cream can be applied. Once your skin is thoroughly cleansed, your provider will sweep a surgical scalpel across the skin’s surface in precise strokes, meticulously scraping away dead cells and fine hairs. After completion, a soothing moisturizer and sunscreen are applied to protect and nourish your newly revealed skin.
Dermaplaning Recovery
Dermaplaning requires virtually no recovery time, making it a great option for those with busy schedules or those who want a quick refresh before a special event. You may experience a slight rosy glow immediately after your session as the skin is newly exposed, but this subsides quickly. It is recommended to protect your skin from direct sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen following treatment to maintain optimal results. Most clients can return to their normal routines right away, enjoying the benefits of exceptionally soft and luminous skin.
Results from Dermaplaning
Brighter, smoother, and healthier-looking skin can be seen immediately after your dermaplaning procedure. Results typically last one month, but repeated treatments can be a great addition to your skincare routine for continuous improvements in skin tone and texture.

Microneedling
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. It is effective in reducing wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and other irregularities in skin tone and texture.
Chemical Peels
Similar to dermaplaning, chemical peels strip away the superficial layers of dead or damaged skin to reveal a new, healthy layer of skin. Fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, dull complexion, hyperpigmentation, and rough skin can all be significantly improved with chemical peel treatments. Chemical peels, especially medium or deep peels, are a more intensive treatment than dermaplaning and might not be a suitable option for patients with sensitive skin.
DiamondGlow® Facial
DiamondGlow is a gentle facial treatment that combines physical exfoliation with intense skin hydration to restore healthier, more youthful-looking skin. This treatment can address a variety of skin concerns, including facial wrinkles, clogged pores, rough skin texture, and more. When dermaplaning is used immediately before a DiamondGlow facial, the nourishing serums delivered during the DiamondGlow treatment can penetrate more deeply into the skin, increasing their effectiveness.
