Mommy Makeover
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
Over the past decade, plastic surgeons have witnessed a sharp rise in the number of mothers electing to have breast and body sculpting surgeries to correct the aesthetic problems resulting from pregnancy and childbirth, also known as a “Mommy Makeover.”
Mommy makeovers can be any combination of breast and body procedures such as breast lift, breast augmentation (with or without a breast lift), breast revision, tummy tuck, and liposuction. At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, board-certified physicians Dr. A. Dean Jabs, Dr. Franklin D. Richards, and Dr. Keshav Magge, understand the pressures of motherhood and family life and will require personalized treatment to ensure that you achieve the best surgical results with minimal pain and recovery time, enabling you to resume your daily family activities with as little interruption as possible. Our office is conveniently located 16 miles away from Arlington, VA and 8 miles away from Silver Spring, MD.
Why Get a Mommy Makeover?
Motherhood is a beautiful and rewarding experience; however, pregnancy and childbirth can place tremendous strain on a woman’s body, and can result in unwelcome aesthetic changes to the breasts and abdomen. Historically, women have suffered with these issues in silence, but with the advances in surgical technology, and the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery, many women are taking steps to restore and enhance their post-pregnancy bodies.
As a mother, so much of your time is devoted to the needs and wants of your children, and in the chaos of daily life, your own needs and desires may fall by the wayside.
Wanting your pre-pregnancy body back, and to feel confident, youthful, and sexy again, is not a sign of selfishness or vanity. When you increase your self-confidence it can improve your quality of life and the quality of your interactions with your loved ones, including your children.
Procedure Options
A mommy makeover procedure is a highly effective way of enhancing women’s bodies post-pregnancy. The amount of procedures chosen to achieve this varies from patient to patient. Generally, women choose 2 or 3 of the following body contouring procedures:
Breast Lift
Mastopexy, or more commonly known as breast lift, is a procedure that lifts and firms sagging breasts, a condition called breast ptosis. Ptosis can present itself in a variety of degrees and can occur from causes such as age, weight loss, or very commonly, due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Whether you’re looking to feel comfortable again wearing strapless dresses or you just want your pre-baby breasts back, a breast lift may be the right choice for you.
For this procedure, an incision is made around the nipple or below the breast. Depending on the type of breast lift you receive, the procedure takes roughly 2 hours and is done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. For breasts that are both sagging and overly large, a breast lift may not be the correct mommy makeover treatment plan, in which case a breast reduction may be recommended.
Breast Augmentation
Sometimes a breast lift is enough for women after they’ve had kids. Others may desire more enhancement because of the amount of volume they’ve lost after breastfeeding. Breasts become full and voluptuous during pregnancy, and some women want to get that look back.
Breast augmentation is the surgical enlargement of the size of a woman’s bust through the use of implants. There are many different options to choose from when considering breast augmentation, including the type of implant, size, shape, texture, incision location, and placement. These are all options that can be discussed during your initial consultation at our Bethesda, MD office.
Breast Augmentation with Lift
While a breast lift procedure creates perky, lifted breasts, the roundness, and firmness associated with the lifting are not equivalent to the fullness you can achieve through breast augmentation. Some patients desire both lifted and increased volume to their bust. This can be accomplished by combining a breast lift with a breast augmentation.
As some may have hesitation about undergoing both procedures at once, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “breast lift surgery and breast augmentation with implants can safely be performed in a single procedure.” One safety benefit of this is only needing one dose of anesthesia for both procedures. Another excellent benefit is only having to undergo one recovery period.
If you are unsure whether you will need one or both procedures, we will gladly answer any questions about your specific case.
Tummy Tuck
Pregnancy sometimes changes the body in ways that diet and exercise just can’t fix. Once the skin and muscles are stretched, in many cases they will not return to the pre-pregnancy figure through external efforts. A tummy tuck procedure can easily fix this aggravating problem.
Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, can dramatically shrink a person’s waistline. This procedure involves the suturing (stitching) of loosened or separated abdominal muscles together and removing excess skin. While this procedure removes some fat, it can be combined with liposuction if there is excess fat that needs to be addressed. It can also be done in conjunction with any breast procedure.
Suturing the abdominal muscles together tightens them, and with the removal of excess skin, it will give you both defined abs and a slimmer waist. In addition, a tummy tuck can remove some stretch marks and redefine your bellybutton. In most patients, a tummy tuck is the only remedy for people looking to trim and flatten their waist after having a child.

Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical approach to removing excess fat by suctioning it through a small tube.
Areas that can be improved by liposuction:
- Buttocks
- Abdomen
- Hips
- Thighs
- Knees
- Stomach
- Underarm

- Chin
- Around the waist
Liposuction can be ideal for mothers who need a little extra help losing specific areas of fat from their pregnancy, no matter how long ago it was. This minimally invasive technique can slim the hips and thighs, shape the arms, and flatten the abdomen. This procedure can be done in conjunction with a tummy tuck and/or a breast procedure.

Recovery and After Care
The length of your mommy makeover recovery will depend on what procedures you undergo. Recovery also varies between patients and how their bodies react to the surgery. To gain a general idea, below are the average recovery lengths and aftercare protocol for each of the mommy makeover procedures:
Breast Lift
A breast lift typically takes 2 hours, depending on the extent of your ptosis and the type of lift you receive. After the surgery, you will be released to a family member or friend. You will be able to see the results immediately, although there will be residual swelling and bruising for several weeks. You will have to sleep on your back, the length of time determined by your surgeon. You will also be given a personalized recovery plan to diligently follow in order to maintain the best results possible.
Breast Augmentation
This procedure, when performed by itself, takes about one and a half hours. After surgery, you will need a family member or friend to drive you home. You are able to return to work 3 – 5 days after the surgery. Results are visible immediately, and any swelling will subside in just a few short weeks.
Breast Augmentation w/ Lift
The length of surgery will depend on the extent of enlargement and lifting done in your case. The results will continue to improve the following few weeks to come, as swelling will greatly subside during that time. Scarring will fade and diminish over time. Gradually you can continue your daily agenda, but for the first month, you should avoid excessive exercising or heavy lifting.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck procedure generally takes 3-4 hours. You will feel some discomfort for the first few days following the procedure, but this will subside quickly. Within 2 weeks you will be back at work. Improvement will be made daily, seeing the full, beautiful results when you complete your recovery.
Liposuction
The length of the procedure will depend on how many areas you receive in liposuction. The discomfort associated with this procedure is similar to a good, hard workout. Patients will wear a compression garment for about 2 weeks. Drains are not necessary for all patients, depending on the areas treated and amount of fat removed. Liposuction results can be permanent, but it is important to exercise regularly and eat healthy to ensure this.
Mommy Makeover Cost
Pricing varies between the combination and extent of your procedures. Prices and financing can be discussed during your consultation.
