Male Tummy Tuck

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Women are not the only ones who can receive the benefits of cosmetic surgery, men can too. Male tummy tucks are on the rise, gaining widespread media coverage.

Men who have lost a considerable amount of weight over a short period of time are often left with excess sagging abdominal skin. The men who often seen abdominoplasty are not looking for vanity, but looking for a firmer physique that allows clothes to fit more comfortably and enables them to live a more active lifestyle. The doctors here at Cosmetic Surgery Associates have created specialized techniques for our male abdominoplasty patients to provide a more firm, sculpted physique.

For more information regarding male tummy tuck, please contact our office today and schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Jabs, Dr. Richards, or Dr. Magge. Our office is located just 11 minutes away from Potomac and 10 minutes away from North Bethesda & Rockville.

About the Male Tummy Tuck

After drastic weight loss, men look to gain a more toned and defined physique but are often left with excess skin throughout their abdomen. Our doctors have designed a tummy tuck procedure that is geared specifically towards men to address concerns that arise on the male body, rather than the standard tummy tuck that designed more for the female figure. This male tummy tuck, clinically known as male abdominoplasty, not only removes excess skin surrounding the midsection but it also tightens the abdominal muscles that have been stretched or separated from excess weight.

A tummy tuck for men will vary from that for women because it does not place emphasis on a curvy figure but rather places the importance on a firm, flat abdomen. The incisions for this procedure are low enough that they can be easily hidden underneath the pant line or board shorts.

Why Men Get Tummy Tucks

The abdomen is a very important and significant portion of the male physique. Men who experience sagging skin throughout their midsection can benefit greatly from this procedure. After Gastric bypass or a type of lap band surgery, men who have lost 60 pounds or more can be left with a hanging pannus. This excess tissue can be rather unattractive and very problematic, causing inconveniences when exercising or performing certain daily activities. Excess abdominal skin may prevent a man from removing their shirt at the beach or during more intimate settings. A male tummy tuck procedure can help to improve confidence and make enhancements to a man’s masculine profile by removing the excess skin that has lost elasticity. Liposuction can be used in conjunction with this procedure to provide a more chiseled contour.

Ideal Candidates

An ideal candidate for a male tummy tuck procedure is someone who has lost a significant amount of weight and is left with unsightly hanging abdominal skin. The patients considering this procedure are looking to tighten and sculpt their abdomen, while also reducing the circumference of their waist by removing excess, sagging skin. The men considering this tummy tuck procedure should be in good health, maintain a stable weight, have realistic expectations of the procedure outcomes.

It is important to understand that this procedure is not a substitute for weight loss, rather a corrective procedure to treat the negative effects of drastic weight loss.

Good candidates for this procedure should be within 5 pounds of their goal weight to receive the best results. Patients who have already lost a large amount of weight but are still on their weight loss journey may be potential candidates because the excess skin that has developed is causing a hindrance to the person’s daily life. Depending on the particular case, the doctor may recommend additional procedures in order to achieve the patient’s desired results.

Consultation

During the initial consultation, either Dr. Jabs, Dr. Richards, or Dr. Magge will start by asking about the patient’s concerns and what he is looking to achieve through by undergoing this procedure. The doctor will then review the patient’s prior medical history, any past procedures, and medications being taken. Reviewing this information will help the doctor to ensure that this procedure is a safe option for the patient. Next, the doctor will perform an examination to identify the patient’s particular concerns and determine if he is a good candidate for a male abdominoplasty. Once he has been found to be a candidate, he and the doctor will work together to build a personalized treatment plan that will help achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals. During this time, the patient will be given a quote for their tummy tuck that has been tailored to the patient’s exact needs.

Preparation

Once the tummy tuck procedure has been scheduled, the doctor will provide the patient with a list of preparatory instructions to be followed. Patients who are smokers will be advised to quit 6 weeks before their procedure. Additionally, to reduce the risk of excessive bruising or bleeding, it is recommended that patients do not take any anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks prior to their surgery. The patients will be asked to make arrangements ahead of time to have a ride home after the tummy tuck procedure. It is also recommended that patients prepare their home for the recovery stage. This includes placing any necessary items at counter length to avoid excessive reaching or movement while healing. If patients have any questions during this time, they are encouraged to contact our office and speak with one of our knowledgeable staff.

Male Tummy Tuck Procedure

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

Our certified anesthesiologist will administer the anesthesia to ensure the patient feels no discomfort through the entire procedure. Once the patient is asleep, the doctor can begin the surgery.

If liposuction is needed, it will be performed prior to removing any excess skin. The doctor will make small incisions around the region of the localized fat and insert a cannula that uses high power suction to remove the fatty cells from the body entirely, contouring the abdomen to provide a more masculine physique. After any excess fat has been removed, a very low positioned incision will be made from hip to hip. Through this incision, the doctor will tighten the abdominal muscles and rejoin them if the patient suffers from diastasis recti or they have become separated after weight gain. Once the abdominal muscles have been tightened, the excess skin on the stomach and the flanks will be removed.

Before closing the incisions, drains may be inserted to obtain any surgical fluid that is left behind. The incisions will then be closed and a compression garment will be placed around the abdomen.

Recovery

Once the procedure has been completed, the patient will be taken to the recovery area for a couple of hours before being released to go home. During this time, he will be monitored by our nursing staff to ensure the patient’s safety before returning to the comfort of their own home. Before leaving the office, the patient will be given a list of recovery instructions that he is encouraged to follow to aid in the recovery and help to provide the best results possible.

It is advised that the patient walks briefly the evening after the surgery. This will help improve circulation and reduce any risk of blood clots from forming. It is best to keep the compression garment on constantly during the healing process as it will help with the swelling and any bruising that may occur. The patients will be instructed to return to the office after a few days for the first postoperative appointment. During this time, the drains will be removed and the doctor can monitor the healing process.

Following the procedure, it is advised that patients do not return to their daily activities for at least one week. More strenuous activities, such as going to the gym or lifting weights, should be avoided for three to four weeks for optimal results.

Male Tummy Tuck Results

Patients will be able to see and feel the results instantly but as healing continues, the results will become more apparent. The final results can be seen after the swelling has fully subsided and the incisions have healed; on average, this takes about 6 months depending on the body’s capability to heal efficiently. The results of this procedure are very transformational and have provided men with the opportunity to look the way they feel!

Additional Procedures

Tummy tucks are not the only cosmetic procedure option for men! The board-certified plastic surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Associates have chosen to provide men with additional procedures that are created specifically with the male physique in mind.

Gynecomastia Surgery

For fully transformation results, patients may combine their tummy tuck procedure with gynecomastia. This procedure is designed to remove excess tissue from a man’s chest. Some men are genetically predisposed to this condition; however, men can also experience this after weight gain. This procedure will remove the unwanted tissue and fat to reconstruct the chest to a smaller and more masculine contour.

Male Liposuction

The male and female bodies are very different, especially when it comes to the areas in which fat resides. The male liposuction procedure is designed to sculpt the male figure and contour a more masculine physique. Liposuction is often the most common procedure that is combined with male abdominoplasty.

Cost

The cost of a male tummy tuck procedure can vary from patient to patient. This procedure is very individualized, making it necessary for the patient to come in for a consultation to receive a quote. During the consultation, one of our board-certified surgeons will work with the patient to build a treatment plan to provide a procedure quote that has been tailored to their exact goals.
