Visible scars are an unwanted reminder of surgery or traumatic injury, which is why we are pleased to offer a variety of scar camouflage treatments at Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, MD. Scar camouflage is a leading-edge cosmetic technique that effectively minimizes the visibility of scars to help patients regain confidence and enjoy a more even complexion.
What is Scar Camouflage?
Scar camouflage refers to a range of non-invasive and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures used to blend or reduce the appearance of scars on the skin. These treatments aim to match the scar to your natural skin tone or improve skin texture and color, making scars less noticeable and restoring a sense of normalcy for each patient.

Good Candidates for Scar Camouflage
Scar camouflage is suitable for most healthy adults who want to improve the look of scars on visible areas such as the face, neck, arms, or body. Good candidates for scar camouflage are individuals with flattened, fully healed scars that are lighter or darker than their natural skin tone. Patients should have scars that are fully healed and stable, as newly formed scars or those with ongoing redness may not be ideal for certain treatments. It is important to have realistic expectations about the results you can expect. A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge is necessary to determine if this treatment can safely and effectively meet your needs.
Scar camouflage can help address scars caused by surgery, injury, burns, or other trauma, improving both appearance and confidence.
How Scar Camouflage Works
Scar camouflage works by altering the color, texture, or visibility of the scar. This can involve collagen stimulation for smoother skin texture, laser skin resurfacing, or application of topical agents to soften and minimize scars. Each technique is customized after assessing the type and location of your scar, your skin type, and your personal goals.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the natural healing process, which includes new collagen production. Collagen is a protein in the skin that gives it structure and a firmer texture. As new, healthy skin is resurfaced and new collagen develops, superficial scars are covered up, restoring smooth, evenly textured skin. During a microneedling treatment, most patients experience minimal discomfort, but a topical numbing cream can be applied if desired.
Depressed acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks, and scars resulting from burns or injury can all be treated with microneedling. For best results, we may recommend a series of microneedling treatments.
Microneedling with PRP
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) contains a wealth of growth factors that promote healing and cellular regeneration. PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, making this a safe, natural treatment. When applied to micro-needled skin, PRP can be delivered into the deep layers of the skin. This accelerates collagen production, further improving scar texture and color and supporting faster tissue recovery for optimal results.
Silicone Strips
Silicone strips are a widely used and clinically proven method to reduce and prevent hypertrophic and keloid scars. These soft, adhesive strips or sheets hydrate the scar and apply gentle pressure, resulting in a flatter, softer, and less noticeable scar over time. They also protect the scar area from irritation or friction. Silicone strips can be applied at home after a thorough consultation with our team. They will assist you with the first application and provide instructions for safe use.
Botox®
Botox is a neuromodulator or botulinum toxin injection that can be used to treat depressed acne scars or indentations in the skin. Repeated facial expressions and muscle movements can cause these scars to stretch, making them more noticeable. By relaxing the underlying muscle, Botox relieves tension around the scar, allowing it to flatten and become less noticeable.
Laser Treatments
Laser therapy is an effective solution for scars with persistent discoloration or uneven texture. We offer a variety of laser skin resurfacing technologies that strip away damaged scar tissue and stimulate collagen production to renew healthy, unblemished skin. With a series of sessions, laser treatments can significantly fade scars, smooth rough contours, and even out skin tone for a more natural appearance.
Skincare
Quality skincare products play an important role in scar management. We recommend Alastin creams, which are formulated with peptides and botanical ingredients to support healing, reduce inflammation, and improve overall skin quality. Medical-grade silicone gels, when applied regularly, help keep scars hydrated, minimized, and less noticeable. Skincare products can be used alone or combined with professional treatments for comprehensive scar treatment.
Consultation
A detailed consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Associates is necessary to create a safe and effective treatment plan. Our board-certified plastic surgeons will examine your scar, review your medical history, discuss your aesthetic goals, and recommend the most effective treatment plan tailored specifically for you. We encourage you to ask questions so you can make an informed decision about your choice of treatment.
Scar Camouflage Recovery
Recovery varies with the treatment method chosen, but most scar camouflage procedures allow for quick healing and minimal downtime. Mild redness, swelling, or sensitivity may occur for a few days, especially after microneedling or laser treatments. Patients may be advised to avoid sun exposure to promote proper healing. Our providers offer thorough aftercare instructions to ensure the best healing and maintenance of results. Proper skincare will ensure long-lasting results from your scar treatment.
Results from Scar Camouflage
As healing progresses, scars become smoother and lighter, creating a more seamless blend between the scar tissue and surrounding skin. Texture and pigment differences are minimized for a naturally improved look. Most patients enjoy a lasting boost in confidence with a visible, long-term reduction in scar prominence. Periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended for optimal, continued results.
