Causes Of Man Boobs: Are They Hereditary?

Gynecomastia, commonly known as “man boobs,” affects up to 60% of males, and it mostly occurs in older men and teenage boys. It causes their breast tissue to enlarge and become bigger than normal. It can happen in one or both breasts and can result in symptoms like tender and painful breasts, nipple sensitivity, and reduced self-confidence.

But what causes this issue? Is it genetic? Let’s take a look at gynecomastia and what causes the condition.

While gynecomastia may be due to genetics in some, it is a relatively rare occurrence. While gynecomastia is common among males, only a small percentage develop the condition due to family history.

That being said, Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic condition linked to enlarged breasts. It happens when males have an extra X chromosome, resulting in an XXY genetic composition.

Other Causes of Man Boobs

While a genetic cause for gynecomastia is rare, there are some causes that are much more common. Some of the other causes of gynecomastia include:

  • Hormonal imbalances: This is the primary cause of gynecomastia, which happens when there is an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. While all males produce some estrogen, they produce much higher testosterone levels, which help block breast tissue enlargement. An imbalance in the hormones weakens the testosterone effects, resulting in breast tissue enlargement.
  • Weight: Being overweight could result in higher estrogen production.
  • Age: Newborns have higher estrogen levels because it is passed from the mother. These levels can also increase during puberty and lead to gynecomastia, but it usually clears up after a few months without medication. Older males produce lower testosterone levels which can increase their chances of gynecomastia.
  • Medications: The most common medications associated with gynecomastia include anti-androgens for enlarged prostrates, ADHD medication, antibiotics, AIDS medication, tricyclic antidepressants, chemotherapy, ulcer medications, anti-anxiety drugs, and heart medications.
  • Excess alcohol and drug consumption, especially anabolic steroids and cannabis, can also lead to enlarged breasts.

Is Gynecomastia Curable?

There are different gynecomastia treatment options depending on the cause. That being said, male breast reduction surgery is often the most effective treatment method.
