Our office is located 5.3 miles from Rockville, MD and 22.5 miles away from Bowie, MD.

What is Male Eyelid Surgery?

Male eyelid surgery, also known as male blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin or fat deposits from either the upper or lower eyelids. This particular procedure differs from the standard blepharoplasty in that it is entirely geared towards maintaining masculine features. Merely removing the excess skin that surrounds the eyes can often leave a soft, more feminine appearance. This procedure has been designed with the male facial structure in mind, ensuring to correct skin laxity and pockets of fat within the upper and lower eyelids while not taking away from the thicker muscles and a heavier brow line that is typically found in men.

Men who seek this eyelid procedure are often looking to treat or correct:

  • Ptosis
  • Ectropion/entropion
  • Double eyelid
  • Heavy under-eye bags
  • Excess skin and wrinkles along the lower lid

Male Eyelid Surgery Candidates

Potential candidates for male eyelid surgery experience sagging skin on the upper eyelids, bags and sagging skin under the eyes, or have droopy lower lids; however, some patients may seek this procedure purely for cosmetic purposes. These conditions can often leave men looking tired or aged. Drooping upper eyelids can also put a hindrance on a person’s sight. Ideal candidates for this male eyelid surgery are men that are in good health and have realistic expectations. To determine if you are a good candidate, please contact our office and schedule a consultation today.

Consultation

During the private consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, the patient will be asked to discuss what their expectations for the eyelid procedure are and what particular concerns they are looking to correct. This will give the physician a better understanding of what the patient is looking for to help them achieve their desired results.

The doctor will be looking at current health conditions, routine medications, and any previous surgeries.

Once this has been discussed, the doctor will conduct a medical evaluation to help determine candidacy for this procedure. It is essential that patients who are considering this procedure do not have any health concerns that pose a risk to a healthy recovery, in turn, negatively impacting that final results.

The physician will perform an evaluation of the eyes and face as a whole to identify the particular concerns and possible treatment methods. During this time, the doctor will work directly with the patient to build a treatment plan designed to provide them with their requested outcomes.

Our doctors recommend speaking with close family and friends before making any decisions to ensure that they will have a support system during their healing process.

Through this plan, the patient will be able to obtain an accurate quote for their male blepharoplasty procedure. If additional treatments or procedures can help improve the results, the doctor will discuss these options with the patient during this meeting. If the patient is a good candidate, they will be able to schedule their procedure date for the eyelid surgery at this time. However, there is no obligation to do so.

Preparation

Once the patient has scheduled their procedure, they will be given a list of instructions to help them prepare for their male eyelid surgery. This list will include individualized instructions pertaining to their specific case, along with the general preparatory recommendations. Patients who smoke will be asked to stop at least six weeks before their treatment. Our doctors advise that patients should avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications two weeks prior to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding and bruising. It is also recommended for patients to arrange a ride home the day of their surgery, as they will be unable to drive themselves. For added convenience during the recovery stage, patients may want to make sure they have someone on-call for the first few days following their procedure to help because their vision may be slightly impaired. During this time, if patients have any further questions or concerns, we ask that they call our office and speak with one of our friendly members of staff. They are ready and willing to help in any way possible!

The Procedure

The male eyelid procedure is performed in-office under local anesthetic; however, in some cases, this procedure can be performed under general anesthesia, although it is uncommon. Depending on the concern, patients can choose from either an upper or lower eyelid procedure. In more severe cases, patients can also opt to undergo both the upper and lower blepharoplasty procedures during the same surgery. The entirety of the procedure will take about 1-3 hours to perform, varying in time if both the upper and lower lids are being treated and if additional treatments are performed.

During the consultation, the doctor and the patient will work together to decide which treatment option(s) will be best to provide their desired results.

Upper eyelid surgery

For the enhancement of the upper eyelids, an incision will be made in the natural crease of the lid. Through this incision, the doctor will remove the excess skin and tissue as necessary. In some cases, men prefer to have a fuller upper eyelid, in which case, a small amount of fat can be injected to achieve this look. Thin sutures will be used to close the incision and the scar, although minimal, will continue to fade until almost completely unnoticeable.

Lower eyelid surgery

For a rejuvenated lower eyelid, the doctor will make an incision either inside the eyelid (transconjunctival) or just near the lower lash line (subciliary). Both of these incision types have their benefits and can be decided on during the initial consultation. Transconjunctival incisions are best to remove pockets of fat, whereas subciliary incisions are best to correct eyelid drooping. During this procedure, fat, tissue, and skin will either be repositioned or removed, and the incisions will be closed using thin sutures.

Additional Male Procedures

To provide our male patients with comprehensive results, our physicians at Cosmetic Surgery Associates have designed additional procedures that are also geared towards the male facial structure to help them achieve their aesthetic goals. Some treatments can be performed in combination with the male eyelid procedure or one their own.

Brow Lift or Forehead Lift

Combining a brow lift procedure with male blepharoplasty can provide more comprehensive results.

In the case that the patient has a low sitting droopy brow line, they may greatly benefit from a male brow lift or forehead lift. This procedure lifts the brow to a more youthful position while still maintaining the masculine, heavier brow line that is often found on men in comparison to women. Male brow lift uses incisions concealed behind the hairline to lift and tighten the skin on the forehead, in turn, also lifting the eyebrows.

Botox® (Brotox)

Botox® is ideal for men who are looking for a non-surgical method of ridding their face of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form on the face from excessive use of the facial muscles when making expressions. Botox® injections work by restricting muscle movement throughout the face which will, in turn, help to prevent further development of these unwanted wrinkles and lines. It should be noted that Botox® is a temporary fix to the signs of aging. Patients will need to return to our office for recurrent treatment approximately every 2-4 months. This treatment is best suited to treat lines and wrinkles that have formed between the eyebrows, forehead, around the eyes, and surrounding the mouth.

Recovery

Once the procedure has been completed, the patient may experience a mild degree of swelling and bruising, but these symptoms will subside within the first week or two after surgery. Before returning home, patients will be given instructions on how to properly clean and care for the treated area, also, how to prevent a dry eye condition from forming. The first few days following their procedure, patients may experience blurry vision or light sensitivity; these symptoms will go away on their own and dark sunglasses can be worn to assist during the immediate postoperative period. Patients will need to sleep with their head elevated to help aid in the healing process and reduce swelling around the eyes. The doctor will prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort felt during this time; however, cold compresses can also help to minimize any pain.

This procedure will remove a tired or dull appearance, leaving a youthful, masculine facial contour.

Sutures will be removed during one of the first post-operative appointments; generally one week after surgery. In some instances, the doctor will use self-absorbing stitches which require no removal at all. Our physicians use the post-op appointments to monitor the patient’s healing process, ensuring the best results possible.

Patients should be aware that this procedure does not prevent future signs of aging and the further development of skin laxity on the eyelids from the natural aging process.

Cost

The cost of a male blepharoplasty will vary from person to person depending on the extent of treatment that is required and if additional treatments will be performed in conjunction with the eyelid procedure for a more comprehensive treatment. Coming in for a consultation is a crucial step in the male eyelid procedure process because this is the time that our physicians can construct a treatment plan for each patient, specifically tailoring it to their exact needs. This will then allow the doctor to provide the patient with an accurate male blepharoplasty quote. For patients who are ready to take the next step and obtain a more youthful appearance, please contact Cosmetic Surgery Associates today and schedule a private consultation with either Dr. Jabs, Dr. Richards, or Dr. Magge.
