About Botox® and Dysport®
To understand Botox® and Dysport for men, one first has to understand how dynamic wrinkles – such as squint lines and forehead lines – form. Dynamic wrinkles form as a result of repeated muscle contractions in the face. Since many of these contractions are involuntary, people can’t consciously suppress their natural facial expressions to keep these wrinkles from forming. Plus, since more and more research points to the fact that looking happy can actually improve inner happiness, why would anyone want to suppress happy expressions? Luckily, there’s Botox® and Dysport for men, or if you will – “Bro-Tox”.
The active ingredient in Botox and Dysport is botulinum toxin type A.
This type of botulinum toxin helps decrease the appearance of dynamic wrinkles around the forehead, eyes, and nose by temporarily freezing communication between nerves and muscles. This means that the muscles that form wrinkles will no longer contract. This doesn’t mean that the face will appear frozen. On the contrary, it will appear relaxed, even perhaps happy. Furthermore, it not only diminishes the appearance of existing unsightly lines but can stave off worsening or future wrinkles.
Why is Botox® for Men and Women Different?
While the formula is the same, Botox® injections for men are not performed the same as for women. The male and female visage differ, so it is only appropriate to treat them differently. Additionally, men and women’s desired results are not exactly the same, with men often wanting to look less angry or stern. Botox® and Dysport are excellent treatment options for dynamic lines and wrinkles that form as a result of repeated voluntary and involuntary muscle contractions. However, they are not good at treating other facial lines and wrinkles that are present even when the face is at absolute rest.
Some of the static lines and wrinkles that cannot be treated by Botox® or Dysport include:
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Vertical lip lines
These lines, on the other hand, are best treated by dermal fillers. Some of the dermal fillers that we offer at Cosmetic Surgery Associates include Juvéderm and Restylane.
Beyond softening the appearance of those lines, dermal fillers can also add volume in areas where volume may begin to lose youthful fullness over time. Some of these locations may include the temples and cheeks. Dermal fillers can also be used to provide a temporary lip augmentation.
In many cases, our doctors or expert injectors may recommend a combination of dermal fillers and Botox® or Dysport in order to help the patient achieve their optimal aesthetic goals.

Dynamic Lines and Wrinkles
Botox® and Dysport can effectively treat the following lines and wrinkles on the male face:
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead lines
- Glabellar lines (frown lines)
- Squint lines
Neck Bands
Neck banding is the formation of lines and bands on the neck. This is due to the movement of the platysma layer, the muscle extending between the collarbone and the jaw. They can make the neck look older and unattractive. Botox® and Dysport can be injected to relax this layer, reducing or even eliminating the appearance of neckbands.
Gummy Smile
A gummy smile is a smile characterized by the excessive appearance of the gums. In general, this means that there are more than two millimeters of gums showing when the patient smiles. Botox® or Dysport can be injected into the upper lip muscle to prevent over-contraction when the patient smiles and thereby temporarily eliminates the appearance of a gummy smile.
Consultation
The consultation is a very important part of our treatment process at Cosmetic Surgery Associates, especially for new candidates. The first order of business during a consultation is to determine whether or not the patient would be a good candidate for the treatment that they are interested in. Our expert Botox® injector will meet personally with the patient and ask them about their areas of concern and then ask the patient to perform a number of facial exercises in order to get a full understanding of the patient’s unique anatomy.
We will also ask the patient about their medical history in order to ensure that there is no medical reason why the patient may not be a good candidate for the treatment. If the patient is a good candidate for Botox® or Dysport treatments, then the doctor or nurse may draw up a personalized treatment plan at the time of the consultation. In some cases, the doctor or nurse may recommend additional or alternative treatments, including dermal fillers, to achieve the patient’s desired goals.
At the time of the consultation, patients will have the opportunity to schedule their treatment. However, there is no pressure to decide on whether or not Botox® or Dysport treatments are the right decision then and there. The goal of the consultation to make sure patients walk away feeling fully informed and ready to make the right decision for them.
Procedure
The Botox® or Dysport procedure is simple and straightforward and takes less than half an hour to perform. At the time of the treatment, our expert injector will mark on the patient’s face where the Botox® or Dysport treatments are to be injected. They will also carefully note how many units are to go into each location.
Most patients do not feel that they need any topical anesthetic during the procedure. However, it is available if patients are interested. Please note that deciding to use a topical anesthetic will increase the duration and cost of the procedure. The injections themselves typically take less than 15 minutes. Following the procedure, there may be a bit of redness or slight swelling around the injection site. This is temporary and will go away on its own. Patients are free to return to their normal routines following treatment.
Results & Follow-Up
The results from Botox® will begin to show over the course of about two to three days. They will continue to improve over the course of a week. Since Botox® and Dysport are only a temporary treatments, the results will wear off after about three to four months. In order to maintain results, patients will need to return for another treatment at this time. Patients will have the opportunity to schedule their follow-up treatment at the time of their initial treatment. As Botox® treatment is maintained, some patients may find that they require less of the product over time. Good Candidates for Male Botox®
Good candidates for Botox® or Dysport maybe men who are concerned about lines and wrinkles on the face and neck or desired it for the aforementioned medical uses. It is important to note that Botox® and Dysport cannot be used to treat static lines that are present even when the face is at rest. For these lines, patients may want to consider dermal fillers.
There is no “perfect” age for men to begin Botox® or Dysport treatments. Often patients will find that they do not need Botox® or Dysport to treat the formation of lines and wrinkles until their 30s or 40s. However, there has been an increase in the number of male and female patients who are getting Botox® or Dysport injections as early as their 20s in order to prevent the future formation of wrinkles.
In general, the majority of patients who are interested in Botox® or Dysport treatments can be good candidates. However, the only way to ultimately determine one’s candidacy is by scheduling a consultation with Cosmetic Surgery Associates in our Bethesda, Maryland office.
