Who Is Not a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover – Dr. Magge

A “mommy makeover” commonly combines procedures, often a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast lift or augmentation, and sometimes liposuction, to restore body shape after pregnancy and childbirth. While many patients benefit from this procedure, it isn’t the right choice for everyone. Choosing surgery when it’s not appropriate increases both risk and dissatisfaction. Below are key reasons someone might not be an ideal candidate.

1. Still Planning Future Pregnancies

Pregnancy can reverse many of the results achieved by a mommy makeover, including stretched skin, abdominal muscle separation, and breast changes.

Recommendation: Delay surgery until you are finished having children.

2. Uncontrolled Medical Conditions

Major health concerns such as uncontrolled diabetes, active heart disease, recent stroke, severe lung disease, or clotting disorders increase surgical and healing risks.

Recommendation: Seek medical clearance and optimize your health before surgery.

3. Active Smoking or Nicotine Use

Smoking or using nicotine impairs blood flow, significantly raising the risk of wound complications, skin necrosis, and poor scarring.

Recommendation: Most surgeons require cessation for several weeks before and after surgery.

4. Significant Obesity or High BMI

A very high BMI raises surgical and anesthesia risks, as well as complication and revision rates.

Recommendation: Many surgeons set BMI cutoffs or recommend weight loss before surgery.

5. Unstable Psychiatric Conditions or Unrealistic Expectations

Conditions such as poorly controlled depression, body dysmorphic disorder, active substance misuse, or unrealistic goals can lead to poor satisfaction with results.

Recommendation: Ensure emotional stability and clear, realistic expectations before proceeding.

6. Poor Skin Quality or Severe Skin Conditions

Issues like uncontrolled dermatitis, active infection, or poor tissue perfusion can impair healing and affect surgical results.

Recommendation: Address any skin health concerns before considering surgery.

7. Recent Major Weight Fluctuations

Rapid or ongoing weight changes within 6–12 months can alter surgical outcomes.

Recommendation: Achieve and maintain a stable weight before scheduling surgery.

8. Active Infections or Untreated Medical Issues

Any acute infection, dental, skin, or urinary, should be fully resolved prior to elective surgery.

Recommendation: Postpone surgery until infections are properly treated.

9. Inability to Take Time for Recovery or Lack of Support

A mommy makeover requires at least two weeks of significant downtime. After procedures involving muscle tightening or breast augmentation, patients should avoid lifting more than ten pounds for approximately six weeks.

Recommendation: Arrange adequate help at home to ensure safe healing and optimal outcomes.

10. Contraindications to Anesthesia

Patients with a history of severe anesthesia reactions or medical conditions that make general anesthesia unsafe may not be suitable candidates.

Recommendation: Discuss alternative or staged procedures with your surgeon.

What to Do If You’re Not a Good Candidate Right Now

If you’re not currently a good candidate, consider taking steps to improve your readiness and safety:

  • Optimize medical conditions (e.g., control diabetes, stop smoking, reach a stable weight).
  • Explore non-surgical or staged treatments such as skin tightening, fat reduction, physical therapy, or supportive garments.
  • Seek counseling to ensure emotional readiness and realistic expectations.

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

It’s important to have an open, honest conversation with your provider. Consider asking:

  • Why do you think I’m not a good candidate right now?
  • What steps can I take to improve my candidacy and timeline?
  • Are staged or less invasive options appropriate for me?
  • What realistic outcomes can I expect based on my health and body type?

Bottom Line

A mommy makeover can be transformative for the right candidate. However, if any of the factors above apply, discuss them openly with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Optimizing your health, timing, and expectations first will provide the safest path to satisfying results.
