In my practice at Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Bethesda, Maryland, my goal is to help each patient choose a breast size that looks balanced, natural, and proportional to their body, not one that simply matches a letter on a bra label.
Why Cup Size Is Misleading
Cup sizes are not standardized. A “C cup” can look completely different depending on a patient’s chest width, rib cage size, breast shape, skin elasticity, and even the brand of bra being worn. The same implant volume can result in very different cup sizes in different patients.
Because of this variability, focusing too heavily on cup size can lead to confusion or unrealistic expectations. What matters far more is how the breasts will look on your body, not what size tag is sewn into a bra.
My Preferred Approach: In-Office Sizing With Factory Sizers
Rather than guessing based on cup size, I use a detailed in-office sizing process with factory implant sizers. This allows patients to see and feel how different implant volumes look on their own bodies before surgery.
During the consultation, patients try on sizers. We then look at the result together, from the front, side, and in clothing, to determine which size best matches their goals. Most patients find this process far more helpful and accurate than talking in terms of cup sizes or implant numbers alone.
Why This Method Works Better
In-office sizing creates a shared visual reference between the patient and me. It allows us to have a meaningful discussion about shape, proportion, and overall appearance, including:
- How full the breasts look relative to the torso
- Upper pole fullness versus a more natural contour
- Cleavage and projection
- How the result will look in everyday clothing
It’s very common for patients to change their initial size preference once they see the options on their own body. That insight, before surgery, is one of the most valuable parts of the consultation.
A Personalized Surgical Plan
Choosing the right implant size is only one part of breast augmentation. I also consider chest width, existing breast tissue, skin quality, implant type, and implant placement. All of these factors work together to achieve a safe, aesthetically pleasing, and long-lasting result.
At Cosmetic Surgery Associates, breast augmentation surgery is performed on site, which allows for seamless care from consultation through surgery and follow-up. This continuity ensures that the plan we develop together in the office is executed precisely in the operating room.
Clarity Leads to Confidence
The patients who are happiest with their results are those who feel confident and informed about their decisions. By shifting the focus away from cup size and toward a personalized sizing process, patients gain a clearer understanding of what to expect and greater peace of mind going into surgery.
If you are considering breast augmentation, I encourage you to think beyond cup size. A thoughtful consultation, hands-on sizing, and an individualized approach are the keys to achieving results that truly fit you.
