One of the most common requests I hear from patients considering breast augmentation is simple: they want a natural look. In my practice, achieving natural-appearing results requires far more than selecting an implant size. It depends on meticulous surgical technique, thoughtful implant selection, and precise implant placement tailored to each patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals.
What Creates a Natural Breast Augmentation Result?
A natural breast augmentation looks balanced, proportionate, and harmonious with the patient’s body. The breasts should appear soft, well-positioned, and appropriate for the patient’s frame—both in and out of clothing. To achieve this, I focus on three critical factors: precise pocket dissection, proper muscle release, and careful implant selection and positioning.
Meticulous Pocket Dissection and Muscle Release
One of the most important elements of my technique is meticulous pocket dissection. When placing implants beneath the muscle, I carefully release the necessary muscle fibers to allow the implant to sit naturally on the chest wall.
Proper muscle release plays a key role in achieving a softer contour and a cleavage that is not widened between the implants. Inadequate release can result in implants that appear too high, too widely spaced, or distorted with muscle movement. At the same time, over-release can compromise implant stability. My goal is a controlled, precise dissection that creates a pocket tailored specifically to the implant and the patient’s anatomy.
Choosing the Right Implant: Size and Profile Matter
Implant selection is never based on size alone. I carefully evaluate the patient’s breast width, chest wall dimensions, tissue quality, and body proportions before recommending an implant. I also go through a sizing process with my patients, using manufacturer sizers, which is very helpful to my patients in picking a size to meet their goals.
The implant profile is also especially important. An implant that is too high-profile for a patient’s breast width may appear overly round or artificial, while a profile that is too low may not achieve the patient’s desired shape or projection. I select an implant that fits the natural breast footprint while still meeting the patient’s goals for fullness and contour.
This process involves detailed consultation and shared decision-making to ensure expectations are realistic and aligned before surgery.
Proper Implant Placement for Natural Contour
Precise implant placement is essential for long-term, natural-looking results. I position the implant so that it is properly centered behind the nipple-areola complex and ensure adequate release of the lower breast to allow the implant to settle naturally over time.
Special attention is given to preserving or carefully redefining the inframammary fold. Maintaining this anatomical landmark is critical to supporting the implant, preventing malposition, and preserving a natural lower breast contour.
A Customized Approach to Breast Augmentation
There is no single technique that works for every patient. My approach to breast augmentation is individualized, taking into account each woman’s anatomy, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. By focusing on precision, balance, and surgical control, I aim to deliver breast augmentation results that look natural, feel natural, and age well over time.
