What Makes Plastic Surgery Exciting? – Dr. Jabs

The Patient’s Perspective

For the patient, plastic surgery offers the chance to correct or improve a physical feature that bothers them—to finally feel proud of something that was once less than optimal. It can give a person a “bounce” in their step and restore confidence that may have been lacking before.

Many times, surgery removes a psychological doubt about appearance that can hold someone back from being their most confident self. The way we are perceived by others is almost as important as the way we perceive ourselves. I often see an improvement in a patient’s overall psychological outlook following procedures.

This positive change even occurs in patients with body enhancements that are not readily visible while wearing clothing, such as liposuction or a tummy tuckBreast augmentation, in fact, has been shown to be the elective procedure that most improves overall happiness among patients.

The Surgeon’s Perspective

For the doctor, plastic surgery is exciting because it is always advancing. It has a rich history and is one of the oldest surgical specialties. Sushruta described a nasal reconstruction with a forearm flap in 600 BCE, written in Sanskrit—a testament to the field’s ancient roots.

Plastic surgery gives us the tools to help people physically, which often leads to an improved mental outlook. It is the only surgical specialty that operates from head to toe. The field is constantly evolving, always finding new ways to restore normal appearance and function in reconstructive cases, and to enhance natural beauty in elective procedures.

A Lifelong Source of Wonder

Throughout my nearly 40 years as a surgeon, I have never tired of the wonder and excitement this specialty brings.

I look forward to another year of discovery.

All the best,
Dr. Jabs
