A recent article in The Free Press, “Do GLP-1s Make Us Happy”, mentioned plastic surgery as a possible way to increase happiness. The author, Arthur C. Brooks, PhD, is a well-known academic in the field of human happiness. In his article, he discusses cosmetic plastic surgery and its ability to raise happiness levels, at least in the short term.
He references a recent study showing that among elective procedures intended to improve appearance, breast augmentation ranked highest in increasing quality of life. This was followed by rhinoplasty, liposuction, and Botox/fillers.
Why Breast Augmentation Increases Happiness
I have performed thousands of breast augmentations over the years and have seen remarkable changes in my patients’ overall attitudes about themselves. You can see it as early as the first post-operative visit.
My patients often share that having the breasts they want, rather than the ones they developed naturally, gives them a powerful sense of well-being and confidence. They say they feel more comfortable in situations where their body is exposed or highlighted by clothing.
Situations Where Confidence Improves
- Being at the beach in a bathing suit
- Being intimate with a significant other
- Wearing a special outfit that looks better with improved body proportions
The Psychological Impact of Breast Augmentation
As a male surgeon, I was most surprised to hear from several women that having larger breasts made them feel more powerful in interactions with other women. This newfound self-confidence is projected outwardly and easily noticed by others.
Importantly, this positive feeling doesn’t appear to be temporary; it often carries over into many other areas of life.
Cosmetic Surgery and Emotional Well-being
Breast augmentation isn’t a guarantee of happiness, but it certainly doesn’t lead to sadness. Cosmetic procedures in general have been shown to significantly enhance both social and emotional quality of life, with breast augmentation offering some of the most notable improvements.
