Consultation

A consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Associates is the first step to receiving facial plastic surgery. During this visit, Dr. Richards, Dr. Jabs, or Dr. Magge will review your medical history, examine your eyelid anatomy, and listen to your concerns and goals. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, view before-and-after photos, and discuss potential outcomes so that you feel confident about each step of the procedure and the results you can expect.

Preparation

Preparation for lower eyelid surgery includes several important steps. Patients may be asked to adjust medications, stop taking blood-thinning medications or herbal supplements, and avoid tobacco use for several weeks before their procedure. We recommend that patients make arrangements for transportation on the day of surgery and help at home during the first few days of recovery. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following all preoperative instructions will promote an easy healing process and optimal results.

Lower Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Lower eyelid surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and each patient’s level of comfort. Once the patient is ready, an incision will be carefully made in the lower lid. Through this incision, your surgeon will remove sagging skin and excess fat, tighten underlying tissues, and reposition the remaining skin. Fine sutures are used to close the incision to create minimal scarring and avoid damaging the thin skin around the eyes. Eyelid surgery usually takes one to two hours, and most patients can return home the same day after a short monitoring period in our recovery room.

Lower Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Recovery after lower eyelid surgery is generally well-tolerated. Mild swelling, bruising, and soreness are expected in the first few days and can be managed with cold compresses and prescription medication. Some patients are able to manage their discomfort with over-the-counter medication alone. Temporary dry eyes and blurry vision may occur on the first day.

We recommend that patients keep their heads elevated to minimize swelling and promote a smooth recovery. Most patients return to work and light activities within one week, after most of the swelling and bruising has reduced. However, it will take several weeks for the body to fully heal, and patients must avoid strenuous exercise for at least four weeks. Post-operative appointments at Cosmetic Surgery Associates may be scheduled to monitor your healing progress.
