What is a Facelift?

Facelift is among the popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States today. The procedure is designed to rejuvenate facial appearance by reducing excess fat and skin from the face and tightening the underlying loose muscles. Facelift cosmetic surgery in Maryland and Virginia with Dr. Jabs and Dr. Richards can help a patient achieve the desired youthful look and reduce the conspicuous signs of aging on the face. Full facelift surgery can typically take 5 to 10 years off the patient’s face by reducing facial wrinkles, folds, and lines, and firming up the skin.

Superlative Candidates

Any adult who is unhappy with the facial signs of aging may consider facelift plastic surgery in Maryland, Virginia, or elsewhere. The procedure is typically suited for people in the age group of 35 to 65. Ideal patients will have some amount of skin elasticity to achieve the best results.

The surgeon will examine the patient’s general health, previous surgeries, facial anatomy, and personal aesthetic goals before recommending a facelift. If the patient is a smoker, they should be willing to quit smoking several weeks before and after the procedure.

Types of Facelift Procedures

Facelift cosmetic surgery in Virginia, Maryland, and other places may be using traditional surgical techniques or as an endoscopic procedure. If the patient needs treatment primarily for the lower face, mid-face, and neck region, traditional surgery may be quite effective. The surgeon will excise the excess skin and fat through an incision, and tighten the underlying weak facial muscles.

Sagging jowls, sagging mid-face, double chin, lines around the mouth and creases underneath the eyelids can be corrected effectively with a traditional facelift. The endoscopic facelift technique is relatively less invasive. The risk of scarring is significantly lower, the surgery is more conservative and the recovery is quicker in an endoscopic facelift.

The technique involves the insertion of a miniature camera through small incisions, which allow the plastic surgeon to view the underlying structures of the face. As a result, the surgeon can lift the cheeks and upper face in a minimally invasive manner. Droopy eyebrows, sagging jowls, cheek folds, frown lines, and wrinkles around the mouth can be corrected with an endoscopic facelift.

The full facelift procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. The incision may be placed around the temple region along the hairline and around the ears. Some patients may only need a mini facelift, while others may need a more comprehensive surgery that is combined with upper face procedures such as brow lift and eyelid lift.

Result

Facelift outcomes are usually long-lasting, and patients can enjoy a younger-looking face for several years to come. Results can be seen almost immediately, but as swelling and bruising resolve over several weeks, the full effects of the procedure become visible.
