What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a specific type of fat transfer procedure where fat is taken from one part of the body and then reused to augment the buttocks. Frequently, the fat is taken from the lower back and flanks, also known as love handles, in order to increase the relative proportion of the waist to the buttocks. This also gives patients a beautifully contoured hourglass shape. By adding volume to the upper portion of the buttocks, patients can attain the appearance of a butt lift without the need for a secondary procedure.
In order to understand what a Brazilian butt lift is, patients must first understand how a fat transfer is performed. A fat transfer works by harvesting fat from a donor location, such as the back or flanks, using liposuction. Then, the fat is purified before being injected back into the buttocks to add volume and shape.
The Brazilian butt lift is an attractive procedure for patients who prefer natural enhancement over implants and other body contouring procedures. However, it does not work to remove excess skin and patients who have lost significant weight may need an additional or alternative procedure, such as a lower body lift, in order to achieve their desired results.
Our doctors are highly trained and experienced in performing fat transfer procedures and, in particular, Brazilian butt lifts. In order to find out if you would be a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift, please contact one of our offices to schedule a consultation.
Ideal Candidates for The Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure
Good candidates for a buttock lift surgery procedure are nonsmokers who would like to naturally augment their buttocks using their own fat cells. In order for fat grafting to be successful, patients should have localized areas of excess fat that can be used as donor sites. For this reason, depending on the desired results, slimmer patients may not be ideal candidates for a Brazilian butt lift surgery. This can only be determined however after a consultation examination.
As always, patients should be in good health and possess the ability to heal following a surgical procedure. They should have realistic expectations about what can and cannot be achieved from a BBL technique. In order to determine one’s candidacy, please request a one-on-one consultation at our office located in Bethesda, Maryland.
Brazilian Butt Lift vs. Implants
These days, the Brazilian butt lift is the preferred method of buttock augmentation for many doctors and patients. The method is very safe since it utilizes fat from the patient’s own body. This means that there is no chance for an adverse reaction or that the body will reject the material. It also gives the patient extremely realistic looking and natural feeling results. However, this cosmetic surgery procedure may not be suitable for everyone.
Compared to implants, a Brazilian butt lift cannot offer the same dramatic augmentation of the backside. For patients desiring these more dramatic results, implants or other surgical procedures may be the best option. Implants may also be the preferred method for patients with slimmer physiques, as they may not have enough unwanted fat deposits on their bodies for augmentation through fat grafting.
As with any procedure, there are pros and cons, which will be discussed in detail during a consultation with your Maryland plastic surgeon. Perhaps the main drawback of buttock implants is that they have the potential to rupture or appear fake. In any case, patients should schedule a consultation with Dr. Jabs, Dr. Richards, or Dr. Magge prior to making any treatment decision. This is the only way for patients to determine the option that would best fit their body and lifestyle.

Benefits of A Brazilian Butt Lift
- No chance of an allergic or adverse reaction to foreign matter
- Extremely safe
- Minimal to no scarring
- Lasting fat removal results through liposuction
- Long-lasting augmentation results
- Natural look and feel
- Incredible body contouring results in a single procedure
While plastic surgery does not guarantee happiness, it can increase one’s confidence regarding their body and, thereby, improve one’s quality of life.
A Brazilian butt lift can be performed under local or general anesthesia. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and takes about four hours to complete. The procedure itself can be broken down into three main steps.
- The fat will be harvested from a donor location(s) on the body using liposuction. Donor locations are frequently the lower back and flanks. Many patients find that by taking fat from these areas and simultaneously amplifying the size of the buttocks, they achieve their optimal contour and proportion. However, the doctor will work with the patient to determine the best donor location for their body. Some other locations may include the upper arms, abdomen, inner and outer thighs, or knees.
- The fat is then purified to separate out unwanted materials out of the fat so that only the most viable fat remains for injection to the buttocks.
- Finally, the purified fat is injected into the buttocks using a very small syringe. Only small amounts of fat are injected at a time and the fat is injected at varying depths. This helps the buttocks retain the maximum amount of fat possible.
Depending on the extent of the patient’s procedure, the procedure can take four hours or more. Patients should make arrangements for a ride home from the procedure prior to surgery.
Dr. Jabs and his staff are knowledge, compassionate and out for your best interest. It’s such a personal choice to consider any plastic surgery, but they help me make the right decision for me. It was a great experience.
BBL Maryland RECOVERY
Brazilian butt lifts do require a significant amount of recovery time relative to other procedures. Patients should plan on spending about two to three weeks recovering from their surgery as they must rest on their stomach or side for a while as to not disturb the fat graft.
Directly following the operation, patients will be outfitted with a compression garment that will aid in healing and recovery. It is important that patients wear garments for the prescribed amount of time following their procedure. However, patients should not put direct pressure on their buttocks for at least six weeks. They will be instructed to sit on a cushion in order to redistribute their weight to other parts of the body. When possible, they should lie on their side or stomach.
Over the course of recovery, patients may experience some bruising and swelling around the liposuction sites and buttocks. This is normal and will resolve itself over the course of two to three weeks. However, patients can aid in the recovery process by avoiding anti-inflammatory medications and taking frequent, but brief walks. In order to help minimize discomfort following surgery, patients will be given prescription pain medication from one of our doctors.
More detailed information about the recovery will be provided when the patient speaks with one of our doctors during their consultation.
RESULTS From BBL
The results from a Brazilian butt lift will be immediately noticeable and continue to improve as swelling diminishes over the course of two to three weeks following the procedure. However, the fat will continue to take to the new area and settle into its final resting position for up to six months. The results are long-lasting. Nonetheless, significant weight loss or weight gain may negatively impact the results. For this reason, it is important that patients maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen prior to and following the procedure.
CONSULTATION / COST
During the consultation with Dr. Jabs, Dr. Richards, or Dr. Magge, patients will have the opportunity to discuss their areas of concern and why they believe they would benefit from the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. Then, one of our doctors will perform an examination to determine whether or not the patient has a suitable donor location for fat harvesting. The doctor will also make sure that the candidate is in good health and will ask about the patient’s medical history.
If the doctor determines that one is a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift, then they will discuss the specifics of the procedure with the patient, including donor location, recovery time, anesthesia, etc. All of these factors can influence the cost of the procedure. Once the doctor has completed their evaluation of the patient and determined the best procedure or combination of procedures in order to achieve their desired results, then they will be able to provide the patient with an accurate cost approximation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are buttock injections permanent?
Fat transferred during a Brazilian butt lift has a good chance of surviving and becoming a permanent result, but not all the fat will make it. Somewhere between 50% and 70% of fat usually survives a BBL, depending on your recovery and the procedure itself.
Can fat transfer be removed?
It may be possible to reverse the effects of a BBL through liposuction, although its important to understand that this would be an additional surgery that incurs additional risks and costs.
Can I die from BBL?
Although technically possible to experience severe complications, such as pulmonary embolism, from a BBL, when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like the ones at CSA, BBL is a very low-risk procedure.
Does fat grafting leave scars?
Depending on your natural distribution of body fat, donor area(s) will receive tiny incisions through which the cannula will be inserted to suction away fat cells for reinjecting, which will also require several tiny incisions. These superficial wounds heal well over time and are virtually unnoticeable.
Does fat transfer last?
Yes, fat transfer procedures, once the fat has settled and re-established a blood source, result in semi-permanent results.
How common are buttock implants?
These days, with fat transfer procedures increasing in popularity, synthetic buttock implants are being overshadowed by convenient, permanent BBL procedures.
How dangerous is liposuction?
Liposuction is not dangerous when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like the doctors at Cosmetic Surgery Associates. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, and pain.
How does fat transfer work?
Fat transfer procedures begin with liposuction, where fat is removed from areas of the body suck as the hips and abdomen. Then it is purified for the best chance at surviving the procedure, before its reinjected into other areas of the body, like the buttocks.
How long does Brazilian butt lift last?
Brazilian butt lift injections, once fully recovered, are essentially permanent, although the procedure cannot prevent the volume loss or sagging that comes with age.
How long does fat grafting surgery take?
A typical Brazilian butt lift takes between 2 and 4 hours depending on your personalized surgical plan.
How much does it cost for fat transfer to the buttocks?
Due to the number of complicating factors, its not possible to give an accurate estimate of BBL cost without a physical examination and detailed surgical plan.
Is Brazilian buttock lift painful?
The recovery from BBL surgery is mostly uncomfortable in the first few days after the procedure, but you will need to avoid sitting on or putting undue pressure on your butt for several weeks to ensure the best results.
What are the side effects of BBL?
Common side effects of Brazilian Butt Lift include swelling, tenderness, scarring, and unfavorable result.
What is a fat transfer?
Fat transfer describes a medical procedure where localized fat from one area of the body is moved to another to enhance the body contour or facial appearance.
What is the BBL?
The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of your butt by taking fat from elsewhere throughout the body and injecting it into the butt.
What is the best type of liposuction?
The best liposuction for any given patient is the one that does not cause much collateral damage to nerve tissue, blood vessels, or other structures in the body, making recovery easier and quicker.
What is the recovery time for fat transfer to buttocks?
Youll need to avoid sitting directly on the treated area for at least two weeks, and residual swelling and healing will be taking place even while youre back to your normal routine for up to six months.
When can I sit after bbl?
Your doctor will tell you when its safe to resume putting pressure on your buttocks, which is between two to three weeks after surgery.
