Have you ever wanted to know more about your neighbors down the street? Well, say hello to the Jabs family of Eagle Ridge Court. Dean grew up in Yucca Valley CA near Palm Springs and Becky Pugh is from a very small town in Arkansas – Portland. Dean bought his Avenel home in 1998. Becky and Dean met on a blind date in 2000 after being introduced by one of Becky’s Bone Jour customers. After two years of dating, they were married at the home that they are still living in, on June 1st, 2002. The wedding was held in the cul-de-sac at Eagle Ridge with neighbors, children, dogs, and butterflies.

Dean is a plastic surgeon. He went to undergraduate school at the University of Southern California, got his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Illinois, and graduated medical school from Rush University in Chicago. He did his residency at Columbia University. Dean is adept in all areas of plastic surgery but specializes in facelifts. He had always wanted to be a doctor after a bike accident where he lost his two front teeth at 10 years of age. He was always fascinated by science and enjoyed watching the dentist handle his injury solidified this medical curiosity. Dean got scholarships all on his own for undergrad, as well as all the way through medical school. The US Army sponsored him through medical school and he worked at Walter Reed Medical Hospital to pay them back.

Becky graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a B.A. in Art. She worked for Congressman Ed Bethune and for the public relations at Gray and Co. before starting the business Bone Jour Inc. In 1986 she started making her own dog biscuits to sell on the side. Her boss had her make them so that they could be included in gift baskets for Senators and Congressmen on the Hill. After being commissioned to do a dog bone replica of the White House, for President George H. Bush, she decided to try her hand at a “dog treat – dog party” business of her own. On February 14, Bon Jour celebrates its 30th birthday!

Dean and Becky have three children and a pup: Hilary Jabs, 24, Connor Jabs, 22 and Wren, 10, and Polie the Corgi, 12.

Hilary went to Carderock Elementary, Pyle Middle School, and Spring Ridge Academy. She graduated with honors from Ithaca College. She is currently in law school at Lewis and Clark in Portland, Oregon. Hilary’s best projects in law school are those that deal with women’s issues.

Connor also attended Carderock and Pyle. He went to Walt Whitman High School where he played Junior and Varsity lacrosse for three years. Connor shares the love of golf with his father and also loves traveling. He is a recent graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Finance.

Wren is a fantastic little artist. She loves painting and drawing with pastels. She loves dressing up and making movies with
her iPad. Wren attends the Diener School in Potomac. She is involved in Girl Scout Juniors and plays soccer on the Big Blue MSI team. She also plays tennis at River Falls Tennis Club and Bethesda Sport and Health.

Dean is an avid golfer- playing at 50 degrees or higher. He loves to ski. The family has a Park City timeshare to coincide with the Sundance Film Festival, where that Dean gets no lift lines and Becky can watch movies. Dean and Connor love duck hunting in Stuttgart Arkansas twice a year with Becky’s brother. Dean is an American history buff and reads everything he can on the founding fathers. Dean, Becky, and Connor are all certified in scuba diving – Grand Cayman is a favorite spot of theirs to dive. Dean has an artistic side – besides the skill of being a plastic surgeon, he is a sculptor, woodworker and glass blower. He loves collecting and drinking California wines and likes to make his own IPA beer.

Becky had always loved animals. She does work for animal rights – mostly involving domestic pets and the factory farming
of farm animal issues. She likes doing events for her store and community. Her favorite is the collection of pumpkins after Thanksgiving for the pigs at Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary – Pumpkins for Piggies. She cannot turn down being in a parade! The Wood Acres Jingle Bell Dog Walk is a favorite one for Bone Jour to sponsor. She also started an organization called Children Serve Animals to raise money for the wild mustangs being slaughtered for dog food. Veterinary school was not an option for Becky since she threw up seeing a dog having surgery.

Art was her other aptitude and she pursued it. She loves doing pet portraits for her store. Becky has been a vegetarian for 26 years.

Dean’s favorite music is Crosby Stills Nash & Young, especially Neil Young. Becky likes Pink, Imagine Dragons, and Coldplay. Her oldies include The Guess Who, Badfinger, Little Feat, Robert Palmer, and Traffic. Becky and Dean like to hear live music. A favorite is going to the State Theatre in Arlington to see and hear local bands like the Night Hawks and the Skip Castro Band.

Their favorite things about Avenel are their neighbors and close friends. Through their children, their book club and other activities, they have made wonderful friendships. Also, the quiet, woody setting at Eagle Ridge brings loads of wildlife to their doorstep. And better yet, the Billie Goat trail and the Old Angler’s Inn are only a bike ride away.
