A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to tighten sagging skin around the midsection or firm up weak abdominal muscles to provide a flatter and more youthful-looking abdomen. This proven surgical procedure can be customized to match the unique aesthetic goals of a patient.

Board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Franklin Richards and Dr. Dean Jabs, operating from their offices in Bethesda MD, and McLean VA, provide tummy tuck and other procedures. They receive patients from Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and surrounding communities.

Suitable Candidates

Any individual who is bothered by the presence of excess weight in the midsection area and saggy skin around the abdomen could be a marvelous and salient candidate for tummy tuck cosmetic surgery. The candidate should be in concrete or fine general health and must be committed to maintaining an active lifestyle and balanced diet following the surgery for prolonged benefits.

The ideal candidate will be a non-smoker or ready to stop smoking several weeks before the procedure. The cosmetic surgeon will also ensure that the candidate should not suffering from a pre-existing condition that could pose a risk during surgery or hinder the recovery process.

Surgical Procedure

The plastic surgeon may perform a tummy tuck using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia, depending on the case. Traditional tummy tuck surgery will involve a single incision along the frontal area of the abdomen from hip to hip.

If navel repositioning is involved to make the tightened abdominal area appear natural, a second vertical incision may be made across the central section of the abdomen. Through this incision, navel sculpting and reattachment will be performed. The surgeon will remove excess fat and skin through the main incision, and also tighten underlying weak or separated abdominal muscles, if necessary.

Once the tightening of abdominal muscles is completed, the excess skin will be removed and the remaining skin is stretched downward to provide a smoother abdominal appearance. In a few cases, liposuction may also be performed to remove excess fat pockets before the skin is stretched. Incisions will be closed with sutures once the surgery is completed.

Patients in Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive tummy tuck surgery from reputed and experienced plastic surgeons, Dr. Jabs and Dr. Richards. The surgeons will customize the procedure to suit the unique anatomy and personal aesthetic goals of the patient. Recovery

Immediately after the tummy tuck procedure, the incision area will be wrapped in bandages, and drains may be placed to collect excess fluid. Mild pain and discomfort in the first week are expected, which can be managed with pain medications as prescribed by the surgeon.

Most patients will need rest and time off from work for about 10 to 14 days following tummy tuck surgery. Moderate walking may be advised during the early recovery period to aid healing, but vigorous exercises and heavy lifting of weights must be avoided for about a month.
