Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a process in which suction is employed to remove excess fat from the body. Suctioning is done by using very thin tubes called cannula which are inserted into the skin through tiny incisions. Suction pressure is applied to these tubes with which the doctors reach for specific skin areas where the fat deposits are high. Due to the technological advancements in the past four decades, liposuction has evolved as a legitimate surgery.

Liposuction – how can it help and whom

There are different types of liposuction, namely tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction, and laser-assisted liposuction. In tumescent liposuction, areas of skin where the tubes will be inserted are numbered using anesthetics such as epinephrine. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is a process in which ultrasound technology is used to liquefy fat for easier suctioning. Laser-assisted liposuction employs low-energy laser light to liquefy the fat in place of ultrasound. Once a liposuction treatment is done, the patients are generally not required to stay overnight at the hospital.

Liposuction does not aim to reduce overall body weight, but it serves its purpose of reshaping some areas of the body. These areas are fat-deposited and might not have been responding well to fitness programs. Common problem areas are the face, abdomen, buttocks, legs, back, and upper arms. Liposuction is used to treat certain medical conditions such as fat tumors, fat metabolism, and auxiliary hyperhidrosis (excess sweating in the armpit area). Obesity cannot be treated by liposuction, and it’s difficult to erase stretch marks if done.

Is weight loss recommended before liposuction?

Various cosmetic surgeons recommend weight loss before liposuction treatment is started. It is strongly recommended for people with problems related to obesity. Many fail to qualify to undergo liposuction due to the presence of other diseases. Most of those diseases are associated with obesity, such as heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, or liver disease. Undergoing weight loss before liposuction treatment will help minimize the risks posed by the conditions of obesity. It minimizes the chances of appearance of stretch marks and areas where fat can be burned naturally do not have to undergo liposuction.

Patients must ensure that their health conditions are sound before opting to undergo liposuction. Being an elective surgery, liposuction itself carries certain risks and side effects which may be reduced easily in normal conditions. Complications may arise if the patient is suffering from other health issues carried by obesity. Weight loss also ensures that the volume of fat removed from the body is less. Hence, the treatment takes less time and effort and proceeds smoothly.
