Male breast reduction, clinically known as gynecomastia surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure aimed at reducing breast size in men who are bothered by the appearance of overly sized breasts. The procedure may include fat reduction through liposuction, surgical excision of excess glandular tissue, or a combination of the two. An experienced surgeon can ensure that gynecomastia is treated safely with substantive or complete correction.

Dr. Dean Jabs and Dr. Franklin Richards are board-certified plastic surgeons, operating from offices in Bethesda MD, and McLean VA. They receive patients from Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and surrounding communities for male breast reduction surgery and various other procedures of the breast, body, and face.

Men who experience one or more of the following conditions may be suitable candidates for breast reduction cosmetic surgery:

The man is hesitant to remove his shirt in public, exercise at a gym, or participate in sports due to his abnormally large breast appearance.
The man is keen to enhance aesthetic body proportion through the reduction of breast size.
The man suffers from adverse psychological consequences due to the presence of large breasts.
The man is low on social confidence due to an awkward breast size.

Treatment Plan

The key goal of the plastic surgeon is to restore a normal male breast contour as well as correct any deformities of the nipple or areola through gynecomastia surgery. Glandular breast tissue is typically denser than fatty tissue, which may require surgical excision of the tissue or a combination of liposuction and excision.

The surgeon will choose the surgical technique depending on the chances of post-op skin redundancy in a particular case. In younger patients, skin shrinkage will be relatively higher as compared to older patients. Dr. Jabs and Dr. Richards provide male breast reduction surgery to patients in Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Alexandria, VA, Chevy Chase, Rockville, MD, and nearby areas.

Intra-areolar Incision

This is a common technique for gynecomastia surgery. It involves an incision extending along the lower half of the areola circumference in the pigmented portion. The incision length will depend on the patient’s breast anatomy.

Skin Resection

In case the condition is more severe, the surgeon may go for a skin resection technique, which involves surgical removal of a portion of the breast structure, and transposition of the nipple as necessary.

Pull-through Technique

This is a less invasive procedure, involving a very small incision made at the edge of the areola. The glandular tissue from the overlying areola is pulled through the incision with liposuction.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction male breast reduction may be used where excessive fatty tissue is present in the breasts. However, only a few patients may need this procedure alone, while a majority will require a combination of liposuction and excision.

The recovery period will depend on the severity of gynecomastia and the extent of surgery performed. On average, a patient who undergoes a combination of glandular tissue excision and fatty tissue liposuction in the breasts will recover in about a week to 10 days.
