Cosmetic Surgery Associates, with offices in McLean, VA, and Bethseda, MD, is a premier practice providing plastic surgery in Virginia and Maryland. Dr. Franklin Richards and Dr. Dean Jabs head the practice that specializes in a range of procedures involving advanced reconstructive and cosmetic surgery in Maryland and Virginia. Both doctors are award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeons, having extensive surgical experience of more than forty years between them.

While the majority of patients at Cosmetic Surgery Associates in McLean, VA, and Bethseda, MD are keen to receive treatments to improve their physical appearance and personality, there is a growing section of women patients who choose plastic surgery in Maryland and other places just to ensure that they can stay competitive at the workplace. This interesting phenomenon has been reported several times in leading publications and television programs, along with interviews of working women who insist that an improved physical appearance can help them in their careers.

Is there a connection between looks and career success?

It is difficult to say with authority that there is a definitive connection between how a woman looks and how competitive she is in the workplace. Employers are largely against all forms of unfair discrimination at the workplace, including discrimination on the basis of an employee’s age or appearance. However, a number of women employees still have a perception that looking old or tired can be detrimental to their career growth and long-term success at the workplace. Women who choose cosmetic surgery in Virginia and other places, solely motivated by a desire to improve their competitiveness at their jobs, are usually not keen to achieve very dramatic physical makeovers.

Their goal is to look vibrant and energetic rather than enhance their physical features to make them look more attractive. Many such women, in fact, do not wish to look much younger than they really are. All they want is to delay the rapid progression of the signs of aging, and somehow freeze their existing appearance for a few more years. They believe that if they look too old or tired, they may gradually lose out in terms of career opportunities and challenging job assignments to their younger counterparts.

Non-invasive Treatments

Working women tend to be more inclined in favor of non-invasive and minimally invasive treatment options. Plastic surgery procedures still dominate by far, but for women who need minor cosmetic enhancement, surgeons may sometimes recommend non-surgical treatments. Botox, facial fillers, cosmetic peels, laser skin tightening, and even ultrasound, radio frequency, and fat-freezing treatments such as CoolSculpting are gaining popularity with working women.

  • The benefits of non-surgical treatments for working women are as follows:
  • Treatment usually does not leave any scars.
  • The duration of treatment is mostly under an hour. Sometimes these treatments are termed “lunch hour” procedures.
  • The recovery period is nil or minimal, and the patient can return to work quickly.
  • Pain and discomfort are negligible, and no general anesthesia or IV sedation is required.
  • Results are usually visible instantly.
  • Risks and complications typically associated with surgery are avoided.

Cosmetic Surgery Treatments

Working women in their forties and fifties are more inclined towards plastic surgery in Maryland and other places because of the inherent advantages of surgery over non-invasive treatments. Outcomes with surgery is usually more effective, more natural looking, and long-lasting. Women in their middle age, having more conspicuous signs of aging or excess fat deposits or suffering from sagging or deflated breasts, are able to achieve much better and lasting results with plastic surgery.

Their goal in most cases is to look fit for their age, but not appear overly ‘plastic’ in the face or body. Many of these women believe they can improve their self-confidence with the help of a surgical procedure and it will eventually reflect positively in their careers.

Plastic Surgery in a Slow Economy

A number of women seeking cosmetic surgery in Virginia, Maryland, and other places seem to think that they can gain a competitive advantage in a tough job environment if they look more youthful and rejuvenated. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) compiled the results of a survey of 756 women between 18 and 64 years of age, which revealed that a lot of working women believe plastic surgery treatments can boost their career prospects.

73 percent of the survey participants said that physical appearance influences their chances of getting hired, receiving a job promotion, or bringing new clients for the business, particularly in a tough economy. Four in five participants said that personal confidence can improve with the help of a cosmetic procedure.
