One of the most popular solutions to achieving self-confidence and femininity is breast augmentation. When combined with a breast lift, it produces a youthful, lifted breast profile. While considering these procedures, it’s not uncommon for women to also think of what their cleavage will look like. The perfect amount of cleavage is subjective though, and while for some women, it may mean that your breasts are closer together, for others it might mean they are wider apart. There are many factors that influence this decision like fashion and celebrities that make us want to achieve a certain look. There are some factors which produce a more pleasing breast cleavage or contour, so it’s important to discuss these with your plastic surgeon.
Are you satisfied with your cleavage?
Cleavage is not just the cup size but actually refers to the closeness of your breasts. When cleavage is close, it can feel sexier and make clothes fit more flatteringly as well. On the other hand, cleavage that is farther apart can create a natural, elegant look. One factor that determines your natural cleavage is how your pectoralis muscles come together in the midline. When you undergo augmentation, the implant volume could lead to a slight narrowing of the gap between your breasts. However, unless you have informed your surgeon during a consultation that you want to improve your cleavage, this narrowing of the gap will be almost negligible. There are some factors that your breast implant surgeon will consider while planning your augmentation procedure and these will include the structure of your chest wall (whether it is flat or barrel-shaped), the prominence of your breastbone, the amount of fatty tissue, and the position of your nipples.
Selecting the best implant shape
Your cleavage can be enhanced when you choose the right kind of breast implant. Usually, a round shaped implant will narrow the gap more than a teardrop-shaped breast implant. This is due to the fact that the base of the round implant is wider.
Implant placement affects your cleavage
Even though your surgeon will consider personal preferences, some factors should be considered to ensure that your cleavage looks beautiful and natural. Your implants can be placed higher on the chest wall to give you a fuller upper pole appearance. However, this is a clear indication that you have implants. Your surgeon may place the implants closer to each other for creating the desired cleavage. However, this could also lead to the undesired ‘uni-boob’. If you have naturally-large breasts and good cleavage, you may still require surgical intervention sometime later since their weight may lead to sagging.
During your consultation, you will discuss the placement of your implants. When placed over the chest muscle, the implants will be closer together and create more cleavage. However, this may not lead to a very natural look and your breasts could sag and visibly ripple later on. The best support is provided to your implants when they are placed under the chest muscle. Your implants must also be centered underneath your nipples to avoid them facing outwards after the surgery. Depending on your natural anatomy, what is achievable with the implants can be limited and it is best to discuss your desires with your plastic surgeon.
Implant dimension and projection affect your cleavage
The larger your implant, the better your cleavage since they occupy more space on your chest wall. Large implants will occupy more horizontal and vertical space on your chest wall, automatically giving you more cleavage. High-profile implants give the most upper pole fullness.
Your plastic surgeon will also help you decide the shape of your implant. Some implants are wider than others, and a well-experienced surgeon will help you make the right choice for your chest anatomy, natural breasts, and your cosmetic goals.
Getting cleavage after your augmentation
If you have already undergone augmentation and still feel that you do not have the desired cleavage, you have some options including surgery for repositioning the implant pocket or fat grafting. When your cleavage is narrow, repositioning the implant pockets will help change this. In certain cases, your surgeon may use surgical tissue to maintain the gap between the breasts and preserve your cleavage.
